Why Great Healthy Dinner Recipes Are Easier to Prepare Than You Think

By Jenny Francis

Dinner is always the type of meal that you can take your time to prepare because you are home from work and you should also have nothing else to do that requires your full focus. In this case, and in any other for that matter, it is a very good idea to try some healthy dinner recipes, considering that anything else surrounding us is not healthy anymore.

I know that I don't have to tell you what foods are usually healthy and which ones you should avoid, which is why I am not going to tell you anything else about specific recipes. All you need to keep in mind is that we have to eat our food fresh, if possible, because cooking it in any way spoils a lot of nutrients and other healthy ingredients.

This is why we recommend eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. As far as the met sector is concerned you can basically eat about a pound of meat each two weeks, but never fry it. Always make sure that it is either boiled or cooked on a grill. Fish and chicken is the best type of meat, so you might want to focus on that first.
How Is Industrial Food Manufacturing Made Safe?

By Valeria Stephens

Expert Author Valeria Stephens
Manufacturers who are involved in industrial food production must comply with strict quality control measures that ensure the safety of our food supply. It is the company's responsibility to make sure the food produced is as fresh as possible, free of toxins and contaminants, properly labeled and adequately preserved. Along with quality control measures, quality assurance standards require accurate documentation including information and lot numbers of all products that are produced. The following measures are just a few of the steps in the food manufacturing process.

Cleanliness and Sterilization

The production environment must be clean and sterile at all times. Each company has a quality control team who is in charge of making sure an area is thoroughly cleaned between each production run. It is also their responsibility to make sure all ingredients used are free of contaminants and in the freshest state possible.

Time and Temperature Settings

One of the most important elements of proper food production is temperature control. Foods must be adequately cooked to prevent spoilage and the growth of bacteria such as salmonella and eColi bacteria. Proper temperature and adequate cook time will keep foods fresh and bacteria free. The type of food being processed will determine the time and temperature settings needed to ensure freshness.

Cross Contamination

Cross contamination is caused by touching one type of food or chemical and then touching another food product or surface. Cross contamination can lead to spoilage, toxicity and bacteria growth. Cross contamination can be prevented by washing hands and cooking surfaces often and making sure all utensils are thoroughly cleaned between each use. Proper storage of ingredients before, during and after the manufacturing process will also help prevent cross contamination.

Quality Control

Food safety training is one of the requirements for individuals who work in the food production industry. Adequate HPCL training ensures staff members and individuals who are responsible for quality control know how to maintain a safe and secure production environment. With this type of specialized training, individuals are taught how to adequate clean and maintain a sterile work area. They know what measures must be taken to ensure quality as well as prevent cross contamination and other possible problems that can lead to spoilage and exposure to bacteria.

Freshness

Freshness is vitally important in the food production industry. Consumers rely on food companies to produce products that are nutritious and safe. They expect labels to be accurate and the ingredients contained in the foods to be safe. To maintain freshness, companies must constantly be aware of the shelf life of both the ingredients and the end product.

Industrial food production is a major process and ensuring the safety of the foods being produced is a meticulous process. Individuals who are involved in controlling the quality of the items being produced must be highly trained and dedicated to maintaining the highest standards possible, making food safety training a key part of the work.

Cutting Calories While Dieting With Cheap Snack Food

By Robert Carleton

Snacks are some of the most expensive foods on the market. It is not uncommon to spend $5 on a big grab bag of chips and a 44 ounce soda at a gas station. Not only are you wasting a lot of money when you make such purchases, you are also contributing to an unhealthy waist line. Cookies, chips, crackers, and soda are all problem areas both for the diet and for the budget. So, here are 10 healthy snacks which have less than 200 calories and are also under $2 per serving.

1. Raw veggies dipped in fat-free ranch dressing:Include lots of bright-colored veggies like carrots, green, red and yellow peppers, broccoli and tomatoes. Red peppers contain almost four times more vitamin C than oranges! Calories: 60 Cost per serving: $1.49. Serving size: 1 cup veggies, 2 tbsp. dressing.

2. One whole hardboiled egg provides 7 grams of protein but 212 mg cholesterol. If you're concerned about the cholesterol, toss the yolk and just eat the white. Calories: 78 Cost per serving: $0.28. Serving size: 1 whole egg.

3. Dark chocolate chips - 60% dark chocolate contains antioxidants and phenols, which can lower blood pressure. Calories: 80. Cost per serving: $0.11. Serving size: 16 chips.

4. Mozzarella cheese stick rolled up in a turkey slice. This provides 15% of the recommended daily calcium and 18 grams of protein. Try dipping in spicy mustard for some kick. Calories: 90. Cost per serving: $0.85. Serving size: 1 cheese stick, 1 turkey slice.

5. Apple with peanut butter. Apples have fiber to make you feel full longer. Spread on some peanut butter for flavor, but limit the portion size of the peanut butter since it is high in calories. Calories: 105. Cost per serving: $0.95. Serving size: 1 medium apple, 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter.

6. Low-fat cottage cheese is good source of calcium and protein, but those with high blood pressure should eat cottage cheese in moderation because of the high sodium content. Calories: 110. Cost per serving: $0.90. Serving size: ½ cup.

7. Fresh berries with fat free yogurt contain antioxidants to help you prevent cancer and heart disease, and yogurt is a nutritious alternative to whipped cream. Sprinkle on some ground flaxseed for additional heart health benefits. Calories: 115. Cost per serving: $1.81. Serving size: 1 cup berries, 1/4 cup yogurt.

8. Whole grain crackers with hummus. Hummus is made from chickpeas, a great lean protein. Whole grain crackers are a preferable alternative to those made with white flour. Calories: 137. Cost per serving: $0.47. Serving size: 10 small crackers, 2 tbsp. hummus.

9. Almonds. Almonds make you feel full and studies have shown they can lower cholesterol, but they're high in calories so limit the portion size. Calories: 160. Cost per serving: $0.55. Serving size: 1 oz.

10. Low-fat yogurt is another good choice for calcium, providing 20% of the recommended daily allowance. But yogurt can be high in sugar. Reduced-sugar varieties have about 100 calories. Cost per serving: $0.59 Serving size: 6 oz.

As you can see, you don't have to break the bank when your trying to eat healthy. With a little common sense and sticking with cheap snack food, cutting calories can be fun and you can lose weight at the same time.

The Benefits of Eating Peanut Butter on a Daily Basis

By Rebecca Shelly

Peanut butter is a very healthy food. Especially when dieting and also for workouts. We are all in a rush with work and families while still trying to fit in exercise that many of us resort to energy and protein bars on a daily basis. Problem is these energy bars are loaded with sugars (even the healthier cane type).

Enter peanut butter; this versatile food will fit in with so many healthy endeavors. It's a great snack with apples, or spread on crackers and especially yummy in a peanut butter workout smoothie with added protein powder for recovery.

Did you know that peanuts are not a nut but a member of the legume family which is related to peas, lentils, chickpeas and other beans? Because of this they have many necessary and healthy nutrients like folate which is essential for the structure of our DNA and RNA at the cellular level and is important for our body tissues like bone marrow and the intestinal tract. Folate is also necessary to help the body synthesis and breakdown amino acids. Without folate or folic acid, your body's nervous system and brain function would be affected in negative ways.

Peanut butter also contains vitamin E, an antioxidant, involved in immune function and also aids the heart along with resveratrol. Other nutrients in peanut butter are the mineral zinc, used by your body for repair and the immune system, niacin, protein and manganese. According to the American Peanut Council, "the Nurses' Health Study that involved over 86,000 women, have found that frequent nut consumption is related to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease." This great little bean also contains thiamine (vitamin B1), B6, riboflavin (B2), iron and calcium.

Peanuts are also a contender with fruit as a source of antioxidants because they contain oleic acid, the same fat in olive oil. The research done on peanuts was found to be as loaded with antioxidants as strawberries and blackberries. They also contain more antioxidants than apples and carrots! This I'm sure will be a surprise to many people as it was to me.

Yes peanut butter does contain fat but 80 percent is good fat which can help you lower LDL cholesterol (the lousy cholesterol). Fat none-the-less is a critical nutrient needed for brain function and for moving fat soluble vitamins where your body needs them like the skin.

It is true you cannot just eat peanut butter alone in a healthy diet but spread on an apple or a PB and banana sandwich will give your body the carbs it needs during the day and help control your hunger. Use the organic peanuts fresh ground or buy a natural organic peanut butter.

If you just cannot get past the fat content I found a dehydrated version that has only 45 calories in 2 Tablespoons and only 13 calories from fat--amazing. You can reconstitute it with apple juice or water or use in baking. My favorite is the protein PB smoothie. They even have chocolate peanut butter. And did I mention, the process is done through a chemical-free process. It does not contain any artificial sweeteners, no preservatives and is all natural.

Make Healthy NYC Fast Food Choices

By Richard Harden

More people in Manhattan and other areas of New York City are realizing the importance of eating well. The problem is finding the time, because everyone is in a rush. Whether you work at a show on Broadway or a business near Union Square, it is important to find healthy food places to grab a quick meal.

Because there are over 20,000 restaurants in New York City, it can be difficult to sort through all of the choices. These places range from large chains to small mom-and-pop operations. You can find fine food establishments like Eleven Madison Park in Union Square, Per Se on the Upper West Side or healthy fast food options like Energy Kitchen. The food goes far beyond sprouts and bland tofu. Instead, you find healthy options such as gourmet raw food, fish and poultry and wraps. This is a much better choice than fast food establishments like Burger King and Taco John's.

If you are new to the area, the best place to look for options is the "New York Times" Dining and Wine guide. They have a huge restaurant database, with more than 4,000 eating establishments listed. They provide ratings on a one-to-four scale, all given by an in-house food critic and customers. Reading what others say can help you make healthy selections, and it can keep you from getting stuck in an eating groove.

Eating lots of healthy food, at least from places that serve low nutrient content, isn't a healthy choice. The problem is some feel like this is their only option when they are in a hurry. They might also be worried about the cost, as fast food tends to offer items at lower prices.

Overview of Medifast and Meal Plans

By Govind Sanjeevan

The Medifast Program has been in function for over 25 years and has been recommended by over 20,000 doctors since 1980 as well having been clinically proven at Johns Hopkins (Studies conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health). Concurrently, the Medifast Program does not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease - however its effectiveness for weight loss has been proven and substantiated. Moreover, through the 5 & 1 Plan, an individual can eat 6 meals a day: 5 meals and 1 Lean & Green Meal (real protein and vegetables). Inclusive of these meals involves 5 meals including shakes, bars, soups, pudding, oatmeal, scrambled eggs and such with an abundance of over 60 meals. In conjunction with these 5 meals, Medifast also allows for a home-cooked meal which is known as the "Lean & Green Meal" consists of a balance of lean protein (such as beef, chicken or fish) and salad or vegetables.

The design of the 5 and 1 Meal Plan is such that it is designed to help an individual gain permanent and healthy eating habits, such as portion-control and eating 6 times per day. Also, in the program involves Transition and Maintenance phase which is designed to accommodate the psychological shift with rewiring lifestyle habits and choices. Lastly, the final stage is Maintenance in wherein an individual gains an understanding of how to sustain your weight loss results by making healthy food choices and living an active lifestyle on a long term basis. In addition, it should be noted that the actual number of calories needed to maintain a stable weight long-term is different for every individual - and the question of finding your own is achieved through experimentation with the Maintenance phase. Also, Medifast offers an online meal planner, weight loss tracker, a community support forum and an exercise guide.

However despite all the pros of the diet program, a few cons which have been raised by people within the community is that the stage 1 (5 & 1 Plan) carries little or no fresh foods, with its predominate goals being a low fat, low calorie blend of balanced foods and appetite suppressors which are presented in easy to eat shakes, bars, puddings, chilis, oatmeals and hot cocoa. Our team was initially skeptical about the 'appetite suppressor' used which is called 'Super Citrimax' and comes from a native Southeast Asian plant, however our concerns were eventually faded as we discovered later that "Garcinia Cambogia" the predominate agent within the suppressor has shown Super Citrimax to be a safe appetite suppressor. A minor caveat however in regards to the usage of the suppressors is that it should only be followed under the direct supervision of a doctor to monitor your weight loss and health.

Moreover, the effects of Super Citrimax, according to the studies, range from inhibiting fat synthesis, decreasing food intake, reducing depression, insomnia, migraines and other serotonin-deficient type conditions. Generally, through further studies and research, it has been concluded that an intake of up to 2800mg a day of HCA has been shown to have no related side effects, with the studies being conducted extensively with clinical testing. Another related issue which may hence arrive in the form of a suppressor dependence for success, meaning that going off the program in the end and doing without the appetite suppressor, could actually result in making it difficult to maintain your new eating habits.

Discover a New Type of Low Calorie Peanut Butter

By Rebecca Shelly

Peanut butter has been a fixture of the American kitchen pantry since it was first made. High in protein and very versatile, even with its high fat content, peanuts contain the good fat we need to be healthy. Runners, dieters and children all love this butter. Who doesn't love a good PB&J sandwich?

I must admit when I look at the calories on a jar of regular PB and see that two tablespoons contain about 190 calories and 140 is from fat then I start to cringe a bit. Even the reduced fat PB contains 180 calories and about 55 from fat in just one tablespoon.

One day while checking out some health related information, I stumbled upon a low calorie peanut butter powder. I thought to myself, "What is PB powder"? I never heard of it. I obviously don't camp much! But when I read that two tablespoons of the powder contain 54 calories, 25 from fat I kept reading about it and since the reviews by others were so enthusiastic I decided to buy some.

Now granted fat gives everything more texture and taste. But for a product that is 100 percent natural and made with no artificial additives or sweeteners and it has 85 percent less calories from fat, well I definitely wanted to try it. These premium quality peanuts are slow-roasted and then pressed to remove the fat. This low calorie peanut butter comes in a dried form and when you add a couple of tablespoons of either water or apple juice or whatever you like, to equal amounts of the powder, the result will be a roasted peanut taste and the consistency of the regular version. You can also mix jelly or jam to make your spread; just use your imagination to come up with your own distinctive flavors.

A Ripe Juicy Tomato - An Incredibly Tasty and Healthy Treat

By Kathy Tennefoss

There is nothing more satisfying than enjoying a fresh, ripe, juicy tomato at the peak of the growing season. Sure, you can purchase tomatoes year round in the grocery store, and some of them are tasty, but there is much to be said for growing your own tomatoes and enjoying the fruits of your labor right off the vine.

Not only do homegrown fruits and vegetables taste great, but by growing your own raw food, you can enjoy organic fruits and vegetables without the worry of hazardous chemicals and pesticides. Not only do fresh raw tomatoes taste good, they are good for you, too. Raw food such as fruits and vegetables boast of many health and beauty benefits. Here are a few things to feel good about when you enjoy eating delicious juicy raw tomatoes.

The Tomato / Cancer Connection

My friend has an amazing garden and grows some incredible tomatoes in the summer months. She often gives me tips and pointers for my own garden. She doesn't allow people to smoke in her garden because she says it will harm the tomato plants. There are mixed thoughts on this subject, but she stands her ground adamantly.

Well, guess what? Smoking might not be good for tomatoes, but tomatoes are good for smoking. They contain two acids that fight against the carcinogens created by cigarette smoke. The tomato doesn't stop there in its war against cancer. The lycopene pigment found in tomatoes contributes to fewer chances of prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and stomach cancer. Lycopene is somewhat of a miracle ingredient that scientists believe stops cancer cells from growing.

Tomatoes Even Make You Pretty

Tomatoes are high in vitamin A, which is a great benefit for many reasons. First, vitamin A improves vision and most notably helps with night blindness, but the mighty A does more than help your eyesight. The vitamin A in tomatoes also supports shiny hair, good bones, vibrant skin, and healthy teeth. Vitamin A combines with the vitamin C in tomatoes to provide a strong anti-oxidant defense against free radicals in the blood. Some of the beta-carotene produced by these two vitamins is lost in cooking because it destroys the vitamin C, which is why a raw tomato snack is a good choice.

Raw Tomatoes are Healthy for Your Heart

Tomatoes contain niacin, potassium, and vitamin B6. Eating tomatoes can reduce cholesterol levels, help with high blood pressure, and lower your risk for heart disease. While the traditional saying is that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, tomatoes should have their place in your healthy diet, too. By snacking on these delicious fruits often, you'll be doing something beneficial to your health, all while enjoying something so incredibly delicious as a fresh, ripe, juicy tomato.

Recipe - The Basil Drizzle Tomato Snack

Ingredients:
Medium sized fresh ripe tomato
Balsamic vinegar (any flavor)
Olive oil
Sea salt, fresh ground black pepper, fresh basil
Fresh chopped basil

Instructions:
Wash tomato and quarter; place on saucer.
Drizzle tomato quarters liberally with balsamic vinegar and olive oil and then garnish with the chopped basil. Season with salt and fresh ground pepper.
Enjoy!

Healthy Ways To Reduce The Calories That You Are Eating

By Mike JJ Johnson

There are many ways of reducing the calories you are eating to help you lose weight. Find out how to do this while still eating a healthy diet.

Many people know that in order to lose weight, you are going to have to cut the calories that you are eating. This process is hard at times because you are used to eating a high number of calories each day. For many people it's hard to cut calories as it will take some discipline. When you do cut calories, you need to be careful that you don't do it in a way that will hurt you. You have to do it in a healthy way. Find out how.

Get rid of the higher calorie foods that you know that you don't need to be eating. At times there aren't any good alternatives to certain types of foods. These need to be cut out completely because they aren't really healthy for you. These are things like trans fats found in fast foods which are not really good for the body at all.

Look for lower calorie versions of foods that you enjoy eating. When shopping at the grocery store, look at all the labels on the back of products, finding the ones that are lower in calories and have less fat content. Many items have low calorie versions if you look for them.

Drink more water as water doesn't have any calories. It will help you to control your hunger as your stomach has something in it. It also will help to control your appetite a bit.

Cereals: A Great Part Of Human Diet

By Dan Fonder

Cereals are group of foods from plants that belong to the grass family. A few of them includes, wheat, barley, oats, rye, corn and rice. They are utilized as food and play an important role in maintaining good health.

Cereals are very nutritious and can be digested easily if prepared in the right manner. The grains' nutritional value is about three times to that of beef, poultry or mutton. They contain one or more of the following, albumen, gluten, fibrin, casein and nitrogenous elements along with sugar, dextrine, starch, mineral elements, cellulose and fatty matters. To be specific, wheat ideally contains the right quantity of food elements. Grains are exceedingly palatable and easy to digest when prepared correctly, yet only one out of fifty families includes them in their diet.

In the past times, grains were considered as staple foods and the highest of quality foods in different nations that consume wheat. Roman soldiers, ancient Spartans and many early people were being fed on a cereal diet.

Nowadays, other nationalities make use of rice as a staple food combined with legumes. Unlike other grain foods, rice contains small amount of nitrogenous elements, thus needing other food materials which contain high nitrogenous substances. That is the reason why Chinese eat beans and peas along with rice.

No matter how we put things, there will always be some people who won't consider grains as part of their diet. This depends with preferences, what one finds nutritious may not be sufficient enough for the other. Sometimes, the complexity of using grains may come in such a way when they are not cooked properly or combined with other food materials.

To stay healthy, a human must take at least 20 to 30 grams of dietary fiber daily. This can be achieved with ease by consuming whole grain cereal products like porridges, breads or cookies.

Barley - Arguably The World's Healthiest Grain

By Dan Fonder

Barley is said to be the oldest of cultivated grains according to historians. Romans, Greeks and Hebrews consider it as their prime bread. Grain is highly regarded by Jews and is used alternately when talking about the fruits of the Earth, as revealed by the sacred history.

Considered as less nutritious than wheat, barley is less favored by some people because of its taste. On the other hand, others may like the nutty and rich taste of barley. In some areas, it is a popular breakfast meal which provides hectic people with proteins and dietary fiber. As to digestibility, it is a bit harder to digest compared to other wheat. It contains starch cells that are less soluble which makes it a bit hard for gastric juice to work on.

There are many varieties of barley: the common ones are two eared or two rowed barley. Barley looks more like oats and wheat but is light in color. People with diabetes will benefit a lot when including barley as a part of their diet. To be specific, a palatable barley soup can do the trick. These include pearled barley with some carrots and root vegetables.

Making a soup by combining these two staples offer a satisfying, warm and filling diet to diabetics and it is a very helpful in a diabetes weight loss program. Tasty liquids such as beef or chicken stock simmered along with pearled barley can please even those individuals with sensitive palates, convincing them that it is a savory meal.

With barley, you can get a lot of health benefits. During a cold weather, it is very suitable to eat a delicious, steaming big pot of barley soup. Whatever stew or soup you are cooking, you can always add whole barley grains to improve the nutritional value of your meal. It is also a good source of copper, manganese and phosphorous.

Low-Calorie Products and Obesity

By Stan V Johnson

Today people are trying to control their diet in order to be more slender. As a result the companies producing food and drinks follow the people's tastes and produce the low-calorie products. But the recent researches showed that the lack of calories can provoke the obesity.

The dietitians carried out different test on the rats and got the unexpected results. Regardless of the weight of an animal the consumption of the low-calorie products promoted the overeating.

The researchers think that the transfer to such food sharply lowers the ability of the organism to regulate the daily norm of the energy. As a result the sensation of satiety is lost, and the man eats more to fill in the lack of fats and carbohydrates.

The dietitians are sure that the rising generation should be accustomed to the balanced food, as it is the best way to brought up healthy and strong children. Colin Wayne - the chairman of the British National Forum, devoted to the problems of the obesity - agreed that the results of the researches were interesting, especially if we take into account the number of low-calorie products that we see in our stores today. But Doctor Wayne summons not to believe these facts unreservedly, because he was confused with the comparing of humans with the rats. But in spite of these disagreements all the scientists and doctors agree that children should be accustomed to the balanced food, not to the low-calorie products.

Besides, the dietitians advise not only to consume enough fats and carbohydrates, but also to reasonably plan the diet.

saturated fats like butter or oil. If the flavor of fat is a must, they should be limited as much as possible. Instead of the flavor of fats or oils, it is also a good idea to substitute them with spices and herbs for extra flavor, a good habit for low cholesterol cooking. The spices and herbs will also be a change to an otherwise routine dish.

When cooking meats, too, many people tend to add lots of oils with claims of additional flavor. Meats have their own flavors, which should be enjoyed, instead of adding large amounts of fat, destroying the original flavor of the

How Sweet It Is

By Brandon Huss

The next time you tear open a distinctively pink packet of Sweet Low, thank Constantin Fahlberg, who patented the world's first artificial sweetener-saccharin. Born in Russia, Fahlberg was living in Germany when he got the chance to go to America and work with the great Johns Hopkins University chemist Ira Remsen. As the story goes, in 1879, Remsen was having dinner with his wife after a hard day in the lab researching coal-tar derivatives.

He noticed the dinner rolls tasted oddly sweet, then bitter. His wife tasted nothing unusual, so Remsen deduced some substance from his lab was responsible. Another version credits Fahlberg's unhygienic habits-not washing his hands-that led to the discovery of benzoic sulphinide, which Fahlberg dubbed saccharin from the Latin for sugar, saccharum. In any case, the two men published a paper about their discovery, but Remsen-who went on to become the university's second president-didn't think much more about it.

Back home in Germany, however, Fahlberg scored financial backing and two patents for saccharin in 1895. Remsen was furious, declaring, Fahlberg is a scoundrel. It nauseates me to hear my name mentioned in the same breath with him. Their subsequent 1890s patent war helped bring public attention to saccharin, and Fahlberg got rich.

First marketed as an antiseptic and food preservative, saccharin found commercial success as a sweetener, boosted by WWI sugar shortages. Sweeten Low, introduced in 1957, took advantage of the fact that saccharin is 300 to 500 times as sweet sugar; it can be used in quantities so small as to effectively contain zero calories.
