Juicing Wheat Grass at Home

By Isobel Gibbons

I'm going to start this article with a statement that might surprise some people: a hand powered juicer is by far the best option when it comes to juicing wheat grass. Why would I say this? Surely, with so many excellent electric juicers on the market using a hand powered juicer is old-fashioned, difficult or slow. The truth is, in fact, that a hand juicer can be faster and easier to use than an electric one - and it can save you quite a lot of money as well!

As you may be aware, wheat grass juice has become immensely popular in the last years as a detox tonic. Many people report significant weight loss benefits, as well as general health improvements after drinking the juice for a period of several weeks. It really is the ultimate natural antioxidant and nutrient shot.

Commonly, the juice is drunk in shots of 30 mL. This is only a very small amount, and is the first reason why a manual juicer is the best way to make this juice at home. It only takes about two minutes to make this kind of quantity by hand, and it really isn't very hard. Sure, an electric juicer might be able to make the same amount in half this time, but why bother? An electric juicer is larger and more complicated to clean, and will invariably take you longer to disassemble, wash, dry, reassembled and put away again. This is not to mention the inevitable tangle of power cords in the kitchen!

Then let's consider the purchase cost of a hand juicer compare to electric one. A good quality stainless steel hand juicer can be bought for approximately $40, while an electric juicer capable of handling the grass (and not all juicers can - you generally need specialised one) will easily cost upwards of $150. This is clearly a significant cost saving, and as mentioned above you are in fact getting a more effective tool.

So if you are seriously considering adding wheat grass juice to your detox, or weight loss diet, make the smart choice - buy a manual juicer machine instead of an electric one. In addition to the above points, a hand juicer is likely to be a very long-term investment, that you will not break down or wear out and you will still be using in five years or even 10 years time.

Some Ideas For Making Low-Calorie Healthy Smoothies for Weight Loss

By Alison Graham

An alternative to purchasing many low-fat or no fat commercial snacks from your local supermarket is to make homemade smoothies. Homemade smoothies are not at all difficult to make. Healthy smoothies for weight loss can be made using pretty much any kind of frozen fruit, low or no fat plain yogurt and small amount of honey (this is optional). Some people also add ice cubes to their smoothie, this is again optional.

The first step in making healthy smoothies for weight loss is to purchase a blender. Blenders are not at all expensive, although the exact cost will depend on what particular model you purchase. Be sure the blender you purchase is good quality and that it can blend ice or frozen cubes of fruit. Not all blenders can blend ice; in fact, many blenders break if you try to blend ice or frozen foods too often. It is important to ensure the blender you purchase is sturdy and good quality.

Next, choose fruits that you like and would enjoy eating. Pretty much any type of fruit is suitable for making smoothies. You will then need to cut the fruit and store it in the freezer; an alternative to this is to freeze the plain yogurt instead. Do not freeze both ingredients, only one.

Slim smoothies are made by blending the fruit and yogurt together. How much fruit and yogurt is added to the smoothie depends on your tastes. Some people like more fruit, while others prefer less. Some people add less yogurt and more ice, while others do not add ice at all. Many people also add sweetener, although this is not really necessary and should actually be avoided. Most fruits are sweet enough on their own and a homemade smoothie does not really need sweetener added to it. If you feel the smoothie absolutely must have sweetener, then add a bit of honey, but be careful not to add too much.

Meal replacement lose weight smoothies can also be healthy, but it is important not to use smoothies to replace regular meals too often. Your body does need other forms of nourishment; cutting back too much on regular meals can actually cause the body metabolism to slow and prevent weight loss instead of helping it. However, replacing a breakfast or lunch with a homemade smoothie can be a good idea from time to time.

Avocado smoothies are good meal replacement smoothies. Avocados, while usually considered a vegetable, are actually a fruit, and they are full of vitamins and minerals that are very good for your body. Avocado smoothies will usually need a bit of sweetener, as avocado is not as sweet as most other fruits; however, be careful not to add too much sweetener to the smoothie. Papayas are another particularly healthy fruit and can also make good meal replacement smoothies.

Healthy smoothies for weight loss are delicious and feel more like a treat than a low-calorie snack! Making smoothies at home is so easy if you have a smoothie maker and they are inexpensive too. So why not indulge your taste buds today and make yourself a yummy low-calorie smoothie?

Low-Calorie Desserts - All the Fun of Cheating on Your Diet With None of the Guilt

By Barbara Cagle

I hate dieting. I would guess you do too. Not only are we required to deprive ourselves of the foods we love, we are made to feel guilty which can actually lead to eating more of the foods we should not be eating. Here are some recipes I have discovered that may help you stay on track without having to make the ultimate sacrifice of no more desserts. These are healthy low-calorie deserts that you can eat on most any diet.

First up VANILLA CUSTARD. At only 20 calories per tablespoon, you can eat a small cup of this without the guilt and it is a delicious treat at the end of any meal.Steeping the vanilla bean in the milk helps mask the fact that a good portion of the fat has been omitted. This rich custard is a no-bake version I am sure you will enjoy.

You will need:

2 c ups low-fat milk
1/2 vanilla bean ( about 2 1/2 inches, sliced down the length to expose the seeds)
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
1 large egg
Pour the milk into a small saucepan and add the vanilla bean. Heat over medium-low heat until small bubbles appear around the edges of the milk. Remove from the heat. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes.

Remove the vanilla bean from the milk, using the tip of a small spoon or butter knife, scrape the remaining seeds from the inside of the bean and stir into the milk. Discard the bean pod.

Stir the sugar and cornstarch in a clean saucepan to blend. Gradually add the milk and stir until the sugar and cornstarch are dissolved. Stir in the egg, and heat the mixture over medium heat until it reaches a boil and has thickened. As soon as the mixture reaches a boil remove from heat. Pour immediately into serving dishes or one large bowl. Cover with clear plastic wrap over the top. Allow the plastic to touch the top of the custard to prevent a skin from forming.Serve chilled.

Makes about 1 1/2 cups

Custards not your thing? How about some CHOCOLATE CAKE? Substituting cocoa powder for baking chocolate will save 10 grams of fat. For this Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Raspberry Glaze you will need:

1 cup plus 12 whole hazelnuts
3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
Oil and flour for the pan (our you can use a baking spray)
2 large eggs
2 egg whites
3/4 cup mild flavored vegetable oil (a corn oil is good)
1/4 cup strong brewed espresso coffee, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cop unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam
Whole raspberries for garnish (optional)
You can also substitute strawberry for the raspberry above

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spread the hazelnuts on a baking pan and heat until the skins are cracked and the nuts are toasted, about 13 minutes. Transfer to a wire mesh strainer and, protecting your hand with a pot-holder and holding the strainer over a bowl or the sink, rub the nuts briskly to remove the loose skins. Cool.

Set aside 12 hazelnuts; coarsely chop and reserve for the garnish. Finely chop the remaining hazelnuts in a food processor with 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Set aside.

Lightly oil and flour a 10 inch spring-form pan: Shake out the excess flour (or use a baker's spray).

Beat the whole eggs and egg whites in a large mixing bowl until frothy. Gradually beat in the remaining 3/4 cup of sugar. Continue beating until the mixture is pale yellow in color, about 5 minutes. At the lowest speed, beat in the oil in a slow, steady stream. Add the coffee and vanilla.

Stir the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt together in a large bowl; stir in the finely chopped toasted hazelnut-sugar mixture. Add the egg mixture and gently fold until thoroughly blended. Pour into the prepared pan.

Bake until the edges pull away form the sides of the pan and the center is firm to the touch, about 35 minutes. Cool on a wire rack 30 minutes. In a small saucepan, stir the raspberry jam over low heat until melted and smooth. Spread in a smooth, even layer on top of the cake. Let stand until the cake is thoroughly cooled and the jam is set.

Loosen the sides of the cake with a small spatula. Remove the sides of the pan. Slide the cake onto a serving platter. Decorate the top with a border of the reserved chopped hazelnuts and evenly spaced whole raspberries, if desired. Serve in thin wedges.

The deep chocolate flavor of this cake disguises the low 281 calories per serving.

Sometimes we just want something fruity. Fruit satisfies that need for something sweet without any of the guilt. Try this simple Winter Fruit Tart for a change. A little higher in calories, but worth it, especially if you substitute for some of those high calorie holiday desserts.

For the WINTER FRUIT TART you will need:

The Filling

1 8 ounce package dried figs, stems trimmed, and quartered, about 1 1/2 cups ( I use the Calimyrna figs)
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup dried apple chunks
1 2-inch piece vanilla bean,split
2 cups unsweetened apple juice (or for a less sweet filling, half apple juice and half water)
For the Crust

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup whole-wheat flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup mild-flavored vegetable oil (I prefer corn oil)
3 tablespoons low-fat milk,or more if needed
2 large ripe pears, peeled, cored and quartered, cut into 1/2 inch wedges
2 tablespoons sliced natural (unblanched) almonds
For the filling: combine the figs, raisins, apples, vanilla bean and apple juice in a medium saucepan. Heat to boiling; reduce the heat to low and cook, covered, until the fruit is tender, about 25 minutes. Uncover, increase the heat and boil until the liquid is evaporated and the fruit is dry, about 2 minutes, depending on the amount of liquid. Transfer to a platter and cool in the refrigerator. Remove the vanilla ban before using the filling.

Meanwhile, make the crust by combining the flours, cinnamon and salt in a bowl. Gradually add the oil while stirring quickly with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Drizzle int he milk and toss with a fork until the dough forms. Gather into a ball and roll the crust between two sheets of wax paper into a 10-inch circle. Fit the dough into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch loose-bottomed tart pan. Use any excess dough to reinforce the sides of the shell to make a rigid edge.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Spread the cooled dried-fruit filling into the tart shell. Arrange the pears on their sides in a sunburst pattern. pressing them into the filling. Sprinkle with the almonds.

Bake in the preheated oven 15 minutes. Reduce the heat to 250 degrees F and bake 20 minutes more, or until the crust is browned. Cool on a rack. Carefully remove the outside rim of the tart pan. Makes about 6 servings.

408 calories per serving, 5 G protein, 12 G fat, 76 G carbohydrates, 197 mg sodium, 0 mg cholesterol.

You can have your sweets and diet too. Many people fall off their diets during the holidays because of the abundance of sweets at every table. Choosing wisely and using these lower calorie options may help you stay on track through the winter holiday season and eliminate that guilt you feel when you find yourself cheating.

What You Must Know About Soy Protein Bars and Weight Loss

By Jonathan Octavius Bell

People up and down the modern countries of the first world are trying to lose weight as our population's waist line seems ever increasing.

Yet even with all of the knowledge nowadays with regards to weight loss we still seem to be getting fatter and fatter. I think when people try to diet it they approach it in completely the wrong direction right from the outset. Little things like planning every single meal just aren't feasible to me as a long term solution to lose weight. Switching every meal to salads and vegetables again strikes me as unrealistic to happen.

If you're overweight then perhaps your self-control isn't one of your strong suits, so why set yourself ridiculous challenges? Telling yourself to completely cut this or that out simply isn't going to work because it's not easy to go back on years if not decades of neglectful eating.

This is why I'm far more in favor of making the little changes that make the big difference in having a healthy weight. If you're into fad diets or anything like that I'd urge you to think again, and I'm not going to sit here and tell you they're dangerous for your health and may seriously damage your body - because they probably won't. I will sit here and tell you that losing weight isn't just dieting for a few months, its understanding how your body works and realizing that a few small changes here and there can make all the difference.

I think soy protein bars help a lot for people trying to lose weight because they achieve several simple aims. Firstly they help to maintain and usually raise the person's metabolism and secondly they act as a tasty and yet low calorie snack.

Where to Buy Fructose Free Foods

By Leonie Washington

High Fructose corn syrup is an ingredient found in almost every processed food and drink that you buy. Many sodas, juice, bread, basked goods and condiments are made with this ingredient. There is a major debate within the food and nutrition community about whether are not high fructose corn syrup is healthy. Some experts say that unlike natural sugar it raises blood sugar levels drastically and is higher in calories, while other experts say consuming fructose free foods does not make one healthier

Whether or not you believe consuming fructose free foods will improve or make no difference to your health, one fact is that sugar is high in calories and too much can be detrimental. So what can you do? For starters you can make small changes to your diet by knowing where to purchase organic foods with natural ingredients and less sugar. A great place to buy inexpensive organic food is Trader Joe's.

Some people have the impression that stores that sell organic foods have high prices. Many items at Trader Joe's that are fructose free such as syrup, salad dressing, bread, juice and ice cream often cost less and some are approximately the same cost as non fructose free foods at popular supermarkets.

Trader Joe's also carry a wide variety of items like meats, produce, dairy, breakfast, baking, snack, and dessert products that are nutritious and also tasty. As America is becoming a society that's more green conscious in how we affect the environment, it is important not to exclude the foods we eat since this is a major part of out lives.

Very Low Fat Peanut Butter Cookies on a Diet: Yes It Is Possible

By Rebecca Shelly

If you are dieting, even on a low carb diet, I bet you never thought you would ever be able to eat peanut butter cookies again! I had given up searching until I found the answer.

Guess what? Here's a recipe for very low fat peanut butter cookies. And when I say low fat, I mean low fat. I used a product that has 85% less fat calories and uses a chemical free process, preservative free and to top it off no artificial sweeteners. I love that fact because I try to eat organic, workout and overall try to be health conscious. Nobody likes to feel deprived and you no longer have to.

Regular peanut butter contains approximately 190 calories in two tablespoons with 145 from fat and can you believe this, only 55 calories, 25 from fat in this kind. The process involves roasted peanuts that have 75% of the oil removed and then it is ground into a tasty powder. It can be used in baking, for camping and reconstituted for even more uses. I have found a way to get my fix using this very low fat peanut butter cookie recipe without all the calories.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

Ingredients:

3 1/2 oz Sugar
3 1/2 oz Packed light brown sugar
1 Egg
1 tsp Vanilla extract
1 tsp Baking soda
1/2 tsp Salt
2 Tbsp Dark corn syrup
1/4 cup Water
1 cup dried peanut butter
6 1/4 oz Whole wheat flour

In a medium-sized bowl, cream together both types of sugar, egg, vanilla, baking soda, salt, corn syrup, water and PB2. Beat until smooth. Add flour, beating until mixture is well combined. Dough will be very sticky. Drop tablespoon-sized balls onto prepped baking sheets. Press top of each cookie with a fork to make parallel lines; flattening cookies to about 1/3 to 1/2 inch thick. Bake cookies for 10 minutes, reversing pans midway through (top to bottom, bottom to top). Remove from oven, and transfer to a rack to cool. Makes about 30 cookies. Enjoy!

What You Must Know About Meal Replacement Bars

By Jonathan Octavius Bell

I think a really important thing you should know about meal replacement bars is that they're a great aid in losing weight - but only if used properly. Most people assume that a meal replacement bar is simply a bar that's allocated to let's say lunch. They think that eating the bar at lunch time will then aid them in losing weight - and this may be the case.

But more important they're meant to be used as part of a small meal diet, where you have five smaller meals instead of five big ones. This type of diet achieves two things, restricting calorie intake and helping maintain or even increase metabolism. From here you should start to lose weight as long as you don't stray from the course!

They're not usually meant to simply replace a meal which was previously much larger. People who want to lose fat, tend to have had a several hundred calorie abundance for several years. A tall man who would need around 2500 calories to maintain his weight may have been eating 2700 for several years. In this instance all he has to do is reduce his calorie intake by 200 to stop gaining weight, and 300-500 to lose mass.

But what's important is that he must have a calorie deficit without affecting his metabolism. Usually when people are desperate to lose weight they think by starving themselves for a week will do the trick. They may lose some weight at first, but when the body realizes it's going to go without food for a while the metabolism drops massively. This means that the tall man's 2500 calorie daily allowance to maintain his weight is no longer applicable... it may be 2000 or even 1500! This is why it's important to lose weight by dieting properly and over a long period - and not just fad dieting - this is why meal replacement bars are so useful in losing weight.

Low Calorie Peanut Butter Smoothie Shake

By Rebecca Shelly

If you work out or just would like a healthy low calorie snack there's nothing like a peanut butter smoothie. Only problem is there are too many fat calories for most health conscious people to even think about eating it.

However, thanks to dehydrated or dried peanuts you can have a decadent treat that is filling and very healthy. Dried peanut butter has 85% less fat calories and it is done through a chemical-free process. It does not contain any artificial sweeteners, no preservatives and is all natural.

You can reconstitute it with water or juice (apple juice is great), honey or jelly, and it can be used in cooking and baking. It has the same consistency as regular and is very pea nutty. You can even take it along to work or school and make a healthy shake, PB&J sandwich or use as a spread for fruit.

With its high protein content, and we all could use more healthy protein, it is perfect as a before or after workout. It does taste slightly different from the regular peanut butter has all the oil which gives it that particular heaviness. A good comparison would be between 1% milk and whole milk. There is a difference but if you are on restricted calories, working out, or just want to eat healthier than it is an excellent option. Two Tablespoons of regular peanut butter has 190 calories, 145 from fat, but the dried has 54 calories, 25 from fat. That is a huge difference.

Here's the workout low calorie dried peanut butter smoothie recipe; organic ingredients are also preferable.

8 oz of almond, rice, low fat milk, or water for even more low calories

2 Tbsp dried peanut butter

1 scoop of protein powder either vanilla or plain

½ to 1 banana sliced

1 Tbsp of coconut oil

Stevia or honey to taste (I don't usually use it)

Yogurt is optional (use a vanilla or plain)

A small handful of ice

I also use various workout powders like glutamine, Branched Chain Amino Acids, hemp or flax powder, but this is totally optional.

Put all ingredients in a blender until mixed.

Add ice and blend on high until all ice is crushed.

Continue to add ice until desired thickness.

There is also a dried chocolate peanut butter available for variations. Enjoy and be healthy!

Healthful Eating Habits: 4 Steps To Improve Your Daily Food Choices

By Becki Andrus

Healthful eating habits are important to a long, thriving life. We have all heard, "You are what you eat," but sometimes that is easy to say but hard to implement into your daily life. This article is going to outline 4 steps that will help to improve your daily food choices.

1. Eat Fresh Produce With Every Meal
Raw fruits and vegetables are power-packed with nutrition, they contain vitamins and minerals that sustain a healthy lifestyle. Many people don't get the recommended amounts of daily fruits and vegetables. You can increase your consumption by making it a point to include fruits and vegetables with every meal. Also, try snacking on them in the middle of the day!

2. Stop Eating Refined Sugars & Refined Flour
Most of the processed foods are made of highly refined ingredients. These foods have been stripped of their natural vitamins and minerals, which means that you are left with very low-nutrition food. These processed foods will provide your body with empty calories, leaving you lacking the essential nutrition that we need for health and wellness.

3. Eat Foods In Their Natural Form
Instead of eating processed foods that come in a box, focus your meals around foods in their natural state. For example, instead of having a bowl of highly processed, sugary cereal in the morning, replace it with a bowl of oatmeal.

4. Stay Away From Artificial Ingredients
Many packaged foods contain ingredients that are not healthy-items such as artificial flavorings and colors, MSG, sodium, sugars, preservatives, and chemicals. The reason these ingredients are included is because they make the food taste better. But, you should avoid them because they are harmful to your health!

It can be a challenge to eat healthy in a world full of modern, processed foods. But, the benefits are worth it! As you start eating more whole foods, you will find that your energy levels will increase, you will feel healthier, and you may even lose weight!

Diet Solutions to Help Lower Cholesterol

By John F Black

Heart Attack is the second most rampant disease in world, second only to cancer. In America alone, there have been 780,000 new cases in 2009. In the same year, 408,000 people experienced their second or third heart attack. All experts expect this number to continually rise if nothing is done to stop it.

The leading causes of heart attacks and heart disease are stress and a bad diet. Bad diet has contributed to the growth obesity cases in the United States. There are over 60 million cases of obesity among adults and over 9 million in children. Obesity cases continue to grow in the continental United States and this trend is crossing over to other countries and cultures as well. Obesity leads to high blood pressure which in turn contributes to heart disease and heart attacks.

New ways of dealing with this rising epidemic are coming out of the woodwork. Gastric Bypass is a means where people dealing with the disease can curb their desire to eat by limiting the capacity of food they can take in. Diet pills have also improved since they have come out and now offer lesser side effects. However, these do not solve the problem. They only alleviate the symptoms. The only true solution to this problem of heart disease is a life change which involves a better diet and a sound exercise plan.

One change that one can make is by eating out less. Home cooked food is healthier because you get to control what goes into it. One added benefit is that preparing your own meals also gives you savings.

Even if you prepare your meal on your own if you do not put in the right things, you will not get healthy. However, sometimes, it is not about what you put in but more about what you do not put in. Try to eliminate fatty items from the food you cook. Choose leaner cuts of meat. Choose healthier oils like vegetable oil and olive oil instead of butter and Crisco.

Removing fatty foods is only the first step. It is also important to add in healthy items to your diet as well. Garlic is a food item that has been proven to lower blood pressure. Garlic is not only good for you, it tastes good as well. Lemongrass is also an herb that works well in lowering cholesterol.

Vegetables are also important in a healthy diet because it is jam packed with beneficial vitamins and minerals. It is also a good source of fiber which in turn helps the digestive system process food better. Studies show that a good digestive system allows for better absorption of nutrients as well as a better excretion of waste and toxins.

Food Supplements and other over the counter drugs can help a person get the necessary nutrients they are missing. There are also alternative drugs that lower cholesterol and in the process guard against heart disease and heart attacks.

Heart disease is a serious concern, especially with a growing number of cases around the world. The disease does not choose who to affect but it often happens to people with families. What happens to these families when their loved one is taken suddenly?

Raw Whole Foods: The Importance of Eating More Raw Fruits and Vegetables

By Becki Andrus

Raw whole foods are a great way to improve your health and wellness. Many people don't understand how much raw foods can improve their health, so this article is going to explore the topic of healthy eating and disease prevention.

One of the main reasons that raw whole foods are so nutritious is because they are still living, so that means that they contain higher amounts of enzymes and nutrition. Enzymes help the body to be healthy by assisting the digestive system to function properly, and the nutrition strengthens the immune system and helps the body to grow and repair.

Numerous studies have linked high levels of health with high consumption of fresh foods. Researchers are finding that you can actually prevent serious disease by consuming more whole foods and less junk foods.

When these same foods are cooked down, it kills many of the enzymes and decreases the overall nutrition of the food. So, the best way to consume fruits and vegetables is in the raw form. You will be able to get the most nutrition by eating them as-is instead of cooking them.

The best time to eat fruits and vegetables is soon after they are picked from the plant. When an item is first picked, it still contains higher amounts of nutrients and enzymes. But, as that item sits on the shelf (or in the fridge) it slowly starts to die, and over time the nutrition may decrease.

As you increase your whole foods intake, it is also important to decrease your intake of junk food. Stop eating foods that are highly processed, because these foods do not contain many nutrients-they are basically empty calories that fill your stomach without adding benefit to your overall health.

If you are trying to transition to a diet that is focused more around whole foods, try making a few substitutions here and there. Add in fruits and vegetables with every meal and decrease the amount of junk food that you are eating. Over time you can slowly increase the health foods and decrease the unhealthy foods, and eventually you will be able to create habits of eating healthy every day!

Natural Whole Foods For Improved Health

By Becki Andrus

Natural whole foods are a great way to improve your health, there are many benefits to eating whole foods every day. This article is going to look at how natural foods are beneficial and why they are important.

The main reason natural foods are important for your health is because they contain high amounts of nutrients that your body needs. These wholesome ingredients have the vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other elements that are necessary for everyday living. When you are eating these foods on a daily basis, your body will be able to get the nutrition that it needs so that it can grow and be strong.

Studies have shown that eating healthy foods can help to reduce your risk of illnesses and serious diseases. Even life threatening diseases such as cancer and heart disease have been linked to poor eating habits! So, it is very important to eat healthy if you want to live a long life.

On the other hand, many popular modern "foods" can impair your health. Fast food, junk food, and highly processed foods are all low in nutrition, and they are often high in fat, sodium, sugars, chemicals and preservatives. You should avoid these foods, and instead focus on eating lots of fresh, healthy foods that will sustain and improve health.

So, what should you be eating? Natural whole foods include fruits and vegetables, legumes and beans, seeds and nuts, whole grains and healthy fats. If you eat a variety of these ingredients, you will provide your body with the nutrition that it needs.

If you aren't already eating whole foods with each meal, make it a point to start adding in more healthy ingredients and decreasing the unhealthy ingredients. Every little bit helps, and over time you will be able to create healthier habits that can be maintained over a long period of time!

Soy Weight Loss

By Jonathan Octavius Bell

Soy weight loss isn't talked about as much as it should be which is very surprising to me because it encompasses everything a good weight loss product should. To start with it's both very healthy and very low calorie - but then a lot of things are in this category. What makes it special is that it can be added to things that make it delicious as well as low calorie and healthy.

If you're looking for something good for you, then you can stop at lettuce - but if you want something that's delicious and good for you you're generally going to have to search a little harder. Most foods that are good for you are also terrible to eat, but when you are talking about soy chocolate bars or soy chocolate protein shakes then you're talking a different ball game.

Most people don't lose weight for the simple reason that it's easier to eat wrong than it is to eat right. Let's face it, chocolate bar and pizzas are no match for salads and vegetables - and so if you're set a diet which is all of the second category then you're almost certainly going to fail it. We all know what's good for us; it's the implementation of that knowledge which is the difficult part.

This is why I think soy weight loss is very important, because soya based products are on the whole very tasty. Is a soy fudge bar going to taste as good as regular fudge, the answer is of course it isn't. But the difference in taste between those two, and then regular fudge and a plate of lettuce is much smaller. Meaning people are far less likely to crash out on their diet, and long term diet solutions is what allows long term weight reduction.

Healthy Food IS an Option at Restaurants!

By Priyanka Naik

Ever since I was a child, my family and I have been fans of eating out. My parents like to diversify their weeknight meals by changing up the type of food we eat- it's not always Indian! So I'm used to eating out a lot, and I think that's trained me to make healthier decisions. I really don't agree with nutritionists that come on let's say The Today Show and tell you how to order food when your out. Here's why:

1. They ALWAYS suggest a meaty dish- such as grilled chicken or turkey or something to that nature. That is NOT very helpful to an on-the-go vegetarian.
2. They almost ALWAYS suggest ordering steamed vegetables- EW who EATS steamed vegetables! No offense, that's nasty and whoever is "cooking" steamed vegetables clearly does not know how to cook very well.
3. They almost NEVER suggest altering orders that are on the menu. Majority of restaurants are usually happy to accommodate vegetarians and healthy eaters- trust me i do at even NYC diners!

Eating out isn't always fancy- especially when you're a student living on a budget. SO that usually means frequenting chain restaurants or settling on a place that all your friends agree upon. Don't worry there are STILL healthy vegetarian options available for these situations and that is exactly what I'm going to discuss.

Last night my parents went to CPK- California Pizza Kitchen and I am a BIG fan of this restaurant. Ok, aside from the horrible service and random objects in your food (happened to my friend), CPK offers a GREAT variety for vegetarians- and they're all generally healthy! My favorite is the Tostada Pizza, which objectively looks VERY unhealthy. But I'm gonna show you how it can be turned into a healthy and scrumptious pie! OK this is what the menu says:

Southwestern black beans, Cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheeses topped with chilled shredded lettuce, and crispy tortilla strips with our homemade herb ranch dressing. Served with a side of homemade roasted tomato salsa. Also available with grilled lime chicken or grilled steak.

So basically how I order is by saying:

-light on the cheese
-ranch dressing on the side
-no tortilla strips

That way I can manage how much dressing to put, which you don't really need a lot of, just a few drops and you still have the strong cheddar flavor, without the excessive amount or fat and calories! Also, the tortilla strips are yummy, but unnecessary (I think at least) because 1 tortilla CHIP not a strip has 1 gram of fat, and frankly the pizza taste awesome to me without it!

For a whole pie BEFORE the healthy adjustments its about 27 grams of Saturated Fat and 1438 calories. With the no dressing, no chips and light cheese, the calories are bound to be cut in half because the majority of the fat comes from the dressing to begin with! So keep eating out, just remember my healthy tips and tricks! Oh also, if they give you attitude about adjusting the order, you should make them WELL aware that you're entitled to get it cooked the way you want it, and your paying for it:)

Cutting Calories While Dieting With Cheap Snack Food

By Robert Carleton

Snacks are some of the most expensive foods on the market. It is not uncommon to spend $5 on a big grab bag of chips and a 44 ounce soda at a gas station. Not only are you wasting a lot of money when you make such purchases, you are also contributing to an unhealthy waist line. Cookies, chips, crackers, and soda are all problem areas both for the diet and for the budget. So, here are 10 healthy snacks which have less than 200 calories and are also under $2 per serving.

1. Raw veggies dipped in fat-free ranch dressing:Include lots of bright-colored veggies like carrots, green, red and yellow peppers, broccoli and tomatoes. Red peppers contain almost four times more vitamin C than oranges! Calories: 60 Cost per serving: $1.49. Serving size: 1 cup veggies, 2 tbsp. dressing.

2. One whole hardboiled egg provides 7 grams of protein but 212 mg cholesterol. If you're concerned about the cholesterol, toss the yolk and just eat the white. Calories: 78 Cost per serving: $0.28. Serving size: 1 whole egg.

3. Dark chocolate chips - 60% dark chocolate contains antioxidants and phenols, which can lower blood pressure. Calories: 80. Cost per serving: $0.11. Serving size: 16 chips.

4. Mozzarella cheese stick rolled up in a turkey slice. This provides 15% of the recommended daily calcium and 18 grams of protein. Try dipping in spicy mustard for some kick. Calories: 90. Cost per serving: $0.85. Serving size: 1 cheese stick, 1 turkey slice.

5. Apple with peanut butter. Apples have fiber to make you feel full longer. Spread on some peanut butter for flavor, but limit the portion size of the peanut butter since it is high in calories. Calories: 105. Cost per serving: $0.95. Serving size: 1 medium apple, 1 tbsp. natural peanut butter.

6. Low-fat cottage cheese is good source of calcium and protein, but those with high blood pressure should eat cottage cheese in moderation because of the high sodium content. Calories: 110. Cost per serving: $0.90. Serving size: ½ cup.

7. Fresh berries with fat free yogurt contain antioxidants to help you prevent cancer and heart disease, and yogurt is a nutritious alternative to whipped cream. Sprinkle on some ground flaxseed for additional heart health benefits. Calories: 115. Cost per serving: $1.81. Serving size: 1 cup berries, 1/4 cup yogurt.

8. Whole grain crackers with hummus. Hummus is made from chickpeas, a great lean protein. Whole grain crackers are a preferable alternative to those made with white flour. Calories: 137. Cost per serving: $0.47. Serving size: 10 small crackers, 2 tbsp. hummus.

9. Almonds. Almonds make you feel full and studies have shown they can lower cholesterol, but they're high in calories so limit the portion size. Calories: 160. Cost per serving: $0.55. Serving size: 1 oz.

10. Low-fat yogurt is another good choice for calcium, providing 20% of the recommended daily allowance. But yogurt can be high in sugar. Reduced-sugar varieties have about 100 calories. Cost per serving: $0.59 Serving size: 6 oz.

As you can see, you don't have to break the bank when your trying to eat healthy. With a little common sense and sticking with cheap snack food, cutting calories can be fun and you can lose weight at the same time.

The Benefits of Eating Peanut Butter on a Daily Basis

By Rebecca Shelly

Peanut butter is a very healthy food. Especially when dieting and also for workouts. We are all in a rush with work and families while still trying to fit in exercise that many of us resort to energy and protein bars on a daily basis. Problem is these energy bars are loaded with sugars (even the healthier cane type).

Enter peanut butter; this versatile food will fit in with so many healthy endeavors. It's a great snack with apples, or spread on crackers and especially yummy in a peanut butter workout smoothie with added protein powder for recovery.

Did you know that peanuts are not a nut but a member of the legume family which is related to peas, lentils, chickpeas and other beans? Because of this they have many necessary and healthy nutrients like folate which is essential for the structure of our DNA and RNA at the cellular level and is important for our body tissues like bone marrow and the intestinal tract. Folate is also necessary to help the body synthesis and breakdown amino acids. Without folate or folic acid, your body's nervous system and brain function would be affected in negative ways.

Peanut butter also contains vitamin E, an antioxidant, involved in immune function and also aids the heart along with resveratrol. Other nutrients in peanut butter are the mineral zinc, used by your body for repair and the immune system, niacin, protein and manganese. According to the American Peanut Council, "the Nurses' Health Study that involved over 86,000 women, have found that frequent nut consumption is related to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease." This great little bean also contains thiamine (vitamin B1), B6, riboflavin (B2), iron and calcium.

Peanuts are also a contender with fruit as a source of antioxidants because they contain oleic acid, the same fat in olive oil. The research done on peanuts was found to be as loaded with antioxidants as strawberries and blackberries. They also contain more antioxidants than apples and carrots! This I'm sure will be a surprise to many people as it was to me.

Yes peanut butter does contain fat but 80 percent is good fat which can help you lower LDL cholesterol (the lousy cholesterol). Fat none-the-less is a critical nutrient needed for brain function and for moving fat soluble vitamins where your body needs them like the skin.

It is true you cannot just eat peanut butter alone in a healthy diet but spread on an apple or a PB and banana sandwich will give your body the carbs it needs during the day and help control your hunger. Use the organic peanuts fresh ground or buy a natural organic peanut butter.

If you just cannot get past the fat content I found a dehydrated version that has only 45 calories in 2 Tablespoons and only 13 calories from fat--amazing. You can reconstitute it with apple juice or water or use in baking. My favorite is the protein PB smoothie. They even have chocolate peanut butter. And did I mention, the process is done through a chemical-free process. It does not contain any artificial sweeteners, no preservatives and is all natural.

Overview of Medifast and Meal Plans

By Govind Sanjeevan

The Medifast Program has been in function for over 25 years and has been recommended by over 20,000 doctors since 1980 as well having been clinically proven at Johns Hopkins (Studies conducted by researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health). Concurrently, the Medifast Program does not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease - however its effectiveness for weight loss has been proven and substantiated. Moreover, through the 5 & 1 Plan, an individual can eat 6 meals a day: 5 meals and 1 Lean & Green Meal (real protein and vegetables). Inclusive of these meals involves 5 meals including shakes, bars, soups, pudding, oatmeal, scrambled eggs and such with an abundance of over 60 meals. In conjunction with these 5 meals, Medifast also allows for a home-cooked meal which is known as the "Lean & Green Meal" consists of a balance of lean protein (such as beef, chicken or fish) and salad or vegetables.

The design of the 5 and 1 Meal Plan is such that it is designed to help an individual gain permanent and healthy eating habits, such as portion-control and eating 6 times per day. Also, in the program involves Transition and Maintenance phase which is designed to accommodate the psychological shift with rewiring lifestyle habits and choices. Lastly, the final stage is Maintenance in wherein an individual gains an understanding of how to sustain your weight loss results by making healthy food choices and living an active lifestyle on a long term basis. In addition, it should be noted that the actual number of calories needed to maintain a stable weight long-term is different for every individual - and the question of finding your own is achieved through experimentation with the Maintenance phase. Also, Medifast offers an online meal planner, weight loss tracker, a community support forum and an exercise guide.

However despite all the pros of the diet program, a few cons which have been raised by people within the community is that the stage 1 (5 & 1 Plan) carries little or no fresh foods, with its predominate goals being a low fat, low calorie blend of balanced foods and appetite suppressors which are presented in easy to eat shakes, bars, puddings, chilis, oatmeals and hot cocoa. Our team was initially skeptical about the 'appetite suppressor' used which is called 'Super Citrimax' and comes from a native Southeast Asian plant, however our concerns were eventually faded as we discovered later that "Garcinia Cambogia" the predominate agent within the suppressor has shown Super Citrimax to be a safe appetite suppressor. A minor caveat however in regards to the usage of the suppressors is that it should only be followed under the direct supervision of a doctor to monitor your weight loss and health.

Moreover, the effects of Super Citrimax, according to the studies, range from inhibiting fat synthesis, decreasing food intake, reducing depression, insomnia, migraines and other serotonin-deficient type conditions. Generally, through further studies and research, it has been concluded that an intake of up to 2800mg a day of HCA has been shown to have no related side effects, with the studies being conducted extensively with clinical testing. Another related issue which may hence arrive in the form of a suppressor dependence for success, meaning that going off the program in the end and doing without the appetite suppressor, could actually result in making it difficult to maintain your new eating habits.

Low Carb Diet Meal That Is Simple and Amazingly Yummy

By Kathy Morrison

Ideally, start out with fresh chicken that you roast in the oven beforehand. I like to get a roaster that is on sale at the market for $1.99 a pound and throw it in the oven Saturday or Sunday afternoon, for a few hours. While you are out picking up a chicken, also get:

1 loaf of decent bread. A brand I like that is very tasty and good for you is Barowsky's Whole (12) Grain Organic Bread.
1 tub of Land O Lakes (soft) Butter with Olive Oil
You also should really have a small food scale if you don't already have one. You should be able to get one for under $10 at most gourmet food (gadget) shops.
How to assemble the meal (and this takes about 1 minute!):

Grab a small plate and put one slice of bread on it and put one teaspoon of the Land O Lakes spread over the bread.
Measure 3 ounces of chicken (If you don't have a scale yet, this is roughly the same amount of meat that you'd get with a standard hot dog) and place it over the spread (turn it into a few small pieces as needed).
Put plate in microwave and run on high for 30 seconds.
Bend bread into the shape of a hotdog roll.
Enjoy! Now isn't that Simple and Amazingly Yummy? You can even refer to it as a "SAY Dog"!
