Cantaloupe Is a Great Morning Snack

This melon that has been known for thousands of years was originally grown in Italy. It has been known since approximately 1,700 years AD and its name stems from an old Italian village name, Cantalup.

This fruit has got very many intrinsic qualities for which it is an ideal produce for a light snack. It must, however, been chosen with great attention. If you can smell its flavor, but the color is two dark, it is overripe and therefore has developed a fermentation. If you can smell the flavor and the color, under the netting, is not green but slightly yellow or orange, then it is the right moment to taste it.

Its flesh is full of juice. Cut the melon in two halves and fill the each half with cottage cheese if there are two people who will eat it. Otherwise, you fill one half and put the other in your refrigerator.

This melon makes up a great snack with very little calories. In fact, one serving of this fruit brings only 56 calories. What makes it very valuable, is its great content of vitamins. Its vitamin C content is outstanding. It covers more than one hundred percent of the daily recommended amount. According to some researchers it not only is important for your immune system but also for the protection of your heart. Another important vitamin is A together with the beta carotenes. These components are extremely beneficial for your vision. According to a research, this vitamin and pro-vitamin protect the smoker's lungs from emphysema and other diseases. They also protect the second hand smokers from various of these diseases.

Other important vitamins contained in this marvelous fruit are those belonging to the B complex. They are vital for your nervous system and your blood circulation.

According to another study carried out by researchers, if you regularly eat cantaloupe melon, you are less exposed to cancer. This is rather astonishing but it probably is due to the high amount and good combination of the various protecting vitamins and trace elements.

For these reasons, it is highly recommended to eat this melon regularly, especially for a morning snack as it is a good nutrition with little calories. It does not bother your stomach.

One has, however, to pay attention to the freshness of this fruit. If you have cut it, keep it in your refrigerator. Germs and bacteria could easily grow on its surface if it is left on the table at room temperature. If you do not like it cold, let it warm up a bit for a few minutes, best if it is covered and not directly exposed to the room.

Eat it often and you will feel its beneficial effects on your energy. Nowadays it is available all year round.

Its best period is, however, between June and August when it is also grown in other countrie4s and not only in the Mediterranean European area from where it covers long distances when it has to travel to other continents.
