Weight Loss Protein Shake

By Jonathan Octavius Bell

People often try fad diets in an attempt to lose weight and rarely do I see something illogical work. Drinking copious amounts of green tea for their antioxidants or only eating this or that isn't an effective method at losing weight - or a healthy way either.

The best methods of losing weight are the ones that don't differ too much from your daily routine, but still mean your overall calorie intake is lower. An example of an extreme diet would be if someone switched from eating junk food all day to eating salads for every meal. No doubt that they'd lose weight, but they're also very unlikely to stick to their change. If they've allowed themselves to get into a state of being overweight then perhaps an honest inference would be that they don't have particularly good self control.

Therefore it isn't logical to think they could stick to a diet consisting of only the things they hated. A much better and realistic solution would be for them to slowly make alterations in their diet that affected their calories but not their appetite.

I really think that a weight loss protein shake is one of the best drinks to use, because it's a switch from perhaps a 500 calorie chocolate bar to a 300 calorie chocolate protein shake. This means it's both tasty and filling - is it as good as a real chocolate bar? Of course not, but the difference between the chocolate bar and the protein shake is tiny compared to the difference between the salad and the chocolate bar.

Moreover they're far less likely to break their diet and go back to their old ways, and from here you can gradually implement more and more slight alterations. It's the little changes that create the big changes, and you go from the near-impossible to the realistic when you make these types of decisions.

Low Calorie Smoothies To Help You Lose Weight, Easy To Make And Delicious

By Alison Graham

If you are trying to lose weight, then one of the main things to watch out for is snacking. Everyone likes to have a delicious snack from time to time; however, most snacks are fully of sugar and empty calories. Even fat-free snacks are not healthy for you in excess. An alternative to unhealthy sugary snacks is making low calorie smoothies at home. All you really need is a blender or smoothie maker, fruit, yogurt, ice, and a bit of honey.

Low calorie smoothies can often be made using frozen fresh fruit. Smoothies of this nature are quite easy to make. You would first of all want to buy some of your favorite fruit-apples, bananas, strawberries, watermelon, peaches, plums- pretty much any fruit will do. You then need to cut the fruit into pieces about the size of an ice cube and freeze it ready for use. Freezing fruit beforehand makes it even quicker to whizz up a low calorie snack when you feel hungry.

Another important ingredient in low fat low calorie smoothies is plain low fat yogurt. This is yogurt that does not have any additional flavoring or sugar-check the ingredient list on the yogurt container to ensure that there are no added ingredients. This can be stored in your refrigerator or even frozen instead of the fruit.

The fruit and yogurt are then blended together. Many people add sugar to such a smoothie, but this is something that you should seriously consider avoiding. Most fruits are quite sweet on their own and you do not need much more sweetener added. If you do want to add sweetener, then often a bit of honey is a good option. Sugar and low or no fat sugar substitutes and sweeteners should be avoided; most are not good for your health.

Smoothies can be part of your healthy eating plan even if you are at your healthy weight and are not trying to diet. Homemade smoothies are not only delicious they are also much healthier than commercial snacks and ice creams. In this case, you can substitute the low fat plain yogurt with regular plain yogurt. You will still want to avoid adding too much unnecessary sweetener.

While the idea of a vegetable smoothie may sound gross, an avocado smoothie can actually be quite delicious. Avocado is actually technically a fruit; while it is not as sweet as most other fruits it can be turned into a delicious smoothie using a good recipe. Avocados are also full of important vitamins and minerals that are very good for your health.

You can make a smoothie using only one fruit, or you can experiment in combining two or more different fruits together to create new smoothie flavors. You will find that these low calorie smoothies are not only fun to make but will also help to boost your health. Drinking smoothies is an enjoyable way of making sure you get enough fruits in your diet. Since fruits and vegetables should actually make up around 60% of a person's diet, you should feel free to indulge in these healthy snacks on a regular basis.

Healthy Thanksgiving Ideas

by Cindy Hamilton

Thanksgiving Day can be a nightmare for those trying to lose or maintain a healthy weight. With everything from mashed potatoes to macaroni and cheese to pumpkin pie all around, the average American consumes over 2,000 calories in this single meal.

But, it is possible to enjoy a Thanksgiving Feast without the guilt. Try these tips:

Whether your Thanksgiving meal is at noon or at night, always eat a healthy meal in the morning to avoid overeating later in the day. Try a bowl of oatmeal with raisins or an egg white omelet with veggies. Arriving at your Thanksgiving meal with an empty stomach will only lead to overeating and guilt.

Workout before going to Thanksgiving dinner or if Thanksgiving is at your house, put the turkey in the oven and then jump on the treadmill or put on a workout DVD. Exercise will improve your mood and help you make better eating choices later in the day. Also, if the weather permits, take a family walk AFTER dinner as well.

If Thanksgiving is at your home, try for healthier menu options such as removing the skin from your turkey, substitute regular butter and cheese for the low-fat versions, use egg whites instead of whole eggs or try low-fat plain yogurt instead of sour cream. Also, remember to offer several healthier side dishes such as steamed veggies or a green salad.

If Thanksgiving dinner is not at your home, offer to bring a side that you know will go well with your diet.

That way you will know that there will be at least one item on the menu that you can eat. Offer to bring a veggie tray, steamed carrots or a big green salad.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep your stomach full. Avoid caffeine and alcohol that can dehydrate you and cause you to overeat.
Remember portion sizes. A serving of turkey should be no larger than the palm of your hand. Opt for a small spoonful of high-calorie foods such as candied yams or cranberry sauce and pile your plate high with foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. When it comes to dessert, only enjoy one small helping of your favorite or opt for fresh fruit instead.

Remember, food does not need to be the main focus of your Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is about enjoying friends and family and being thankful for all the many blessings throughout the year.

How to Make Beef and Jicama Spring Rolls - Bo Bia

By Lena Ho

Beef and Jicama Spring Rolls are another version of spring rolls, with different fillings. In Vietnam, Bo Bia is usually made by street vendors, selling in the food cart similar like Mexican burrito in the US. When I was young, between classes, we would come pick up some snacks during the break. There was some 'mini' food cart strategically positioned on a busy street corner, hand rolls and money were exchanged and here we went happily with our favorite food snack. I rarely see this dish serving in the restaurants here in the US. However, we do it at home often because it's fun to eat, light enough to be a perfect snack for children after school and it's tasty.

Recipe to Make Beef and Jicama Spring Rolls - Bo Bia

Ingredients:
1 medium jicama, peeled and cut into matchsticks, same size as shredded cheese
3 carrots, peeled and cut into matchsticks, same size as shredded cheese
1 package of rice paper rounds, 8 1/2 inches in diameter
4 Chinese sweet sausage
8 eggs, pan fry into 4 1 inch Egg sheets (2 eggs each), cut into 1/2 inch wide strips
1/2 cup dried shrimps, rinsed under hot water and coarsely chopped
1 1/2 cups Spicy Hoisin Garlic Sauce
1 head leafy lettuce, leaves separated
1 bunch of mint leaves
Oil for cooking
1 green onion, finely chopped
5 cloves garlic, finely minced

In a small skillet or saucepan, combine the sausage with water to reach halfway up their sides. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook until all liquid has evaporated. The sausage will soften and pump up. Transfer them to a cutting board and slice each sausage diagonally, creating long thin slices. Place on a plate and set aside.

In a wok or large skillet, heat up 2 tbsp of oil and drop in 1/2 green onion and garlic. Stir fry until fragrant, then add the shrimps, saute for about 30 seconds. Place on a plate and set aside.

In a same wok or large skillet, heat up 1 tbsp of oil and drop in the remaining green onion and garlic. Stir fry until fragrant, then add carrot sticks. Add in 2 spoons of water, cook it for about 1-2 minutes, then add jicama sticks in. Mix it up and cook until carrots and jicama is soft but still slightly crunchy. Mix in a pinch of salt and pepper, then adjust the seasoning with more salt if needed. Transfer to a plate.

To serve the roll, set out all components on the table, including separate plates of sausage, shrimps, egg strips, sauteed carrot and jicama, lettuce leaves, mints, rice paper and a bowl of dipping sauce. Boil a kettle of water, and pour it out into a bowl for dipping rice papers.

To make the spring roll, soften the rice paper by diping it into hot water. Lay it down on a plate and top the rice paper with some lettuce, mints, carrot, jicama, shrimps, few slices of Chinese sausage, couple egg strips and crushed peanuts. Roll it in firmly. The spring rolls should be eaten as they are made with the dipping sauce.

Oatmeal Banana Muffins With Raisins

By Alice Boter

Looking for a good and easy recipe for oatmeal banana muffins? No need to look any further. Even if you are not a kitchen goddess you will be able to make these nice and healthy oatmeal banana muffins with raisins.
Good recipe for picky kids
There are a lot of kids that state they don't like oatmeal. That is because they never had these nice sweet muffins before. The raw material might not be their cup of tea but by adding the sweet raisins and baking it there is a good chance they will change their minds. With this recipe everybody must love oatmeal. I think even picky kids will give these muffins a try. If your kid is really really picky maybe it's better to tell them afterwards that these muffins are quite healthy and packed with fiber, some kids don't even want to try healthy stuff (I know it's stupid but that's the way it works with picky kids)
Because of the whole wheat flour and the oats this muffin will add lots of nutritious fiber to you your diet. Why do you think sportsmen love fiber? It is exactly what you're your body needs to get going. There is also fresh fruit in these muffins so what's not to love about these muffins? I would say it's the perfect breakfast muffin.
Ingredients for oatmeal banana muffins with raisins
  • 1 cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of instant oats
  • ¼ cup of dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup of granulated sweetener (check if you can use it for baking, not all sweeteners can do that)
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • ½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup of raisins / sultanas
  • 3 mashed bananas
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup of vegetable oil
  • ½ cup of buttermilk (you could also use low-fat yogurt)
Directions for making oatmeal banana muffins with raisins
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

  • You will need two bowls for this recipe, one for all dry ingredients and one for the wet ingredients.

  • In the dry bowl we will place the Whole wheat flour, the instant oatmeal, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon and the sugar and the sweetener.

  • In the wet bowl collect the other ingredients: mashed bananas oil, eggs and buttermilk

  • Make sure all ingredients are mixed in their own bowl

  • Now make a well in the dry ingredients and pour the wet ingredients into the well. Fold the batter until just mixed. Stop folding asap. If you keep stirring you will end up with rubbery muffins so don't try to get rid of every lump you see.

  • Now scoop the batter into the prepared muffin tin (I like those paper liners, makes it easier to eat the muffins without getting dirty fingers)

  • Put the muffin tin in the preheated oven and enjoy the smell of homemade fresh healthy muffins for 20 minutes.

  • Check with a toothpick for doneness
Hope you and your family will enjoy these muffins just as much as I do

If you maintain small portion of meals, this will avoid the risk of starving, and you will be surprised to see a different figure by the end of the week. You can also avoid drinks with too much sugar that will surely add up to your weight.

Another thing to consider when choosing the best diets to lose weight is to incorporate exercise into it. Always remember that no diet plan can ever be effective without the help of sweat boosting activities that can increase the body's metabolism, which is very much needed if you want to burn the unwanted fats in your body.

Aside from exercise, eating low carb foods are also very popular these days, especially to the ones who are very particular in reducing fat. Since there is a big demand on programs that will help people lose the extra pounds, people are more and more adventurous in finding the most effective plans, which will not just trim down their waist, but will also improve their body's health overall.

The main idea of eating low carb food is highly based on the term "ketosis." To those who are not familiar with what ketosis means, it is the ability of the body to make use of all its stored fats, and burn it, to get your body pumped up with full energy.

The crash and low carb diet plans are just some of the best diets to lose weight and to promote fat reduction. Nonetheless, there are still more of these kinds of plans for fat reduction that you can try out. Just make sure to seek the proper advice from a health doctor prior to taking action, to prevent any type of health damages.

Why I Love Asparagus - Ridiculously Low In Calories, High In Nutrients

By Felicitas Ramos

Fruits and vegetables are indisputably the best components of healthy diet. They boost your energy and spirit; they make you full and they make you healthy. If you want to reduce your risk to a number of diseases, eat plenty of these. They can never over-dose and the right kinds of fruits and vegetables will not make you gain weight. Many of them are perfect for a low-calorie diet.

I have loved asparagus, in whatever preparation - be it fresh or canned. I love all parts of its shoot - tips and spears. I enjoy eating them boiled, grilled, steamed or as garnishing. And perhaps, you will not believe it, but they are the usual contents of my snack box. It is fun munching a piece while you are at the train station or bus stop waiting for your ride.

You might think that I am advertising this vegetable. Yes I am, but not for ads that will earn me some dollars. I want to spread the goodness in every bit of asparagus, my favorite greens. Aside from its appeal to my taste buds, asparagus is ridiculously very low in calories. But then - there are so many benefits that make the body healthy, fit but slim.

In many researches and analyses, hundred grams of fresh asparagus will only give you 20 calories. Then digesting this vegetable will require you to burn more calories than what it contains such that some nutritionists classify it as negative calorie food or at least low-calorie vegetable.

Asparagus is loaded with nutrients - potassium, folic acid (folate) and dietary fiber. The potassium had been researched to be helpful in reducing blood pressure. Folic acid is an important nutrient for the DNA synthesis in your cells. The fiber content helps in detoxification, prevention of constipation and decrease in the level of bad cholesterol. Furthermore, the dietary fiber regulates the blood sugar. From the asparagus shoot's dietary fiber alone, you reduce your risk of stroke, heart ailment, diabetes and colon cancer.

For vitamins, asparagus contains vitamins K, C, A, E and B-complex (niacin, thiamine, riboflavin). These vitamins make the immune system stronger. Vitamin K, if you are not yet aware is needed by your body for healthy bones. Fresh asparagus spears are good sources of anti-oxidants which again are reducing your risk of cancer. The anti-oxidants help remove the harmful free-radicals that aside from lowering cancer risks also protect the body from viral infections.

My favorite snacks (asparagus shoots) also contain minerals like copper and iron. Copper is needed in the production of red blood cells while iron is essential in the formation of red blood cells.

With this information, you should already develop the habit of adding some asparagus shoots in your lunch box. These are not expensive vegetables and you can eat as much as you want - they are not only low in calories, they can even have zero or negative calories.

How Healthy Is The Food From Meal Delivery Services?

By Corey Andalus

Meal delivery services are chef prepared meals that are a worthwhile alternative to fast food. The main concept of meal delivery services is an easy meal planning, and high quality meals that are healthier and more balanced. The expert preparation and prompt food delivery will give you a nice break and still get a delightful meal and healthy experience. The changing requirements in the nutritional needs of many Americans gave rise to the demand in the food industry to use the latest methods in high-quality food delivery to provide a variety of meals with little effort on their part. The increase and incidence of obesity and diabetes is a national concern and are attributed to the fast food consumption which contains higher calories.

If you have diabetes, you have to eat special food to maintain your blood sugar to a healthy level. You have to adhere to your dietician's recommendation like avoiding saturated fat in your meals, white flour, or red meats like beef and liver. Depending on your calorie needs, you are only allowed 11 servings of starches a day and must choose whole wheat starches. Three to five servings of non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans, carrots, cucumber, and tomatoes should be added to your meals daily. And in order to prevent weight gain, fat and oil intake must be limited to 3-4 servings a day.

Eating special food is not enough. You have to make healthy choices. But, in our society where both partners work, we spend more time getting to and from work. This makes providing for ourselves and our family difficult. Even in the best circumstances, preparing creative meals with the best nutrition is a constant struggle. If you are a vegetarian, you will enjoy several attractive options from fresh organic ingredients that are much safer and tastier.

The best thing about food prepared meals is, no artificial preservative is required because the food is freshly prepared and all you have to do is reheat. Every meal is also prepared with weight watchers in mind, with automatic portion control. Once the meals are fully prepared, they are flash-frozen to seal in freshness. When you are ready to eat them, all you have to do is reheat. You are assured that prepared meals are nutritionally sound so you don't have to choose between good taste and nutrition anymore because each meal is a perfectly balanced diet. You don't have to worry about the nutritious value of your food anymore because there is no need to count calories or read labels anymore.

Many of these meal delivery services offer a-la-carte options, which include appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts including a preference of choosing your own meal.

How Much Time Could a Diet Meal Delivery Service Save You?

By Benjamin Davidson

How much time could you save by using a freshly prepared diet food delivery service?

Most successful professionals would state that the one thing they need more of it time. With the plethora of confusing and often contradicting advice about living healthily out there, planning and preparing food intake can take up an incredible amount of that valuable leisure time.

Diet food delivery services plan, cook and deliver all your meals and snacks you need for the day, ostensibly freeing up more time for fun and family. But does it really save time? We decided we would have a look at how much time using a diet delivery service could save you by asking some friends to record how much time they spend on shopping, preparing and cooking their meals.

We think you'll agree - the results are shocking:

Total time spent cooking, shopping, preparing and researching your diet -

22.75 hours per week.

The shopping hours did NOT include the time taken to travel to the shops. Cooking and preparing time includes serving cold meals as well as the full preparation of hot cooked meals. The target couple used for this experiment are both professionals, without children, and would class themselves as food enthusiasts without being major foodies. One of the couple is weight conscious and considering a more structured diet, both are keen to keep healthy and are therefore careful with what they eat. So we can see in the table below that over the week our researching couple took 22.75 hours in preparing, cooking, researching and shopping for their food.

Total Hours Spent - Shopping - 6.50

Total hours spent - cooking - 12.50

Total Hours Spent - preparing foods - 2.00

Total Hours Spent - researching your diet - 1.75

Overall Hours Spent - Total - 22.75

A total of 6 and half hours are spent shopping every week. That is a great deal of time to spend in soulless supermarkets queuing with the masses. 12 and half hours are spent slaving over the cooker, what else could you be doing with 12.5 hours per week?

As we have spoken about before the diet industry has a vested interest in confusing and frightening its customers, so researching and reading about new diet fads, with all the competing and contradictory advice and information can take a lot of time as well being extremely frustrating.

If you enjoy the reading and the cooking, this is all fine essentially. If not, look for a diet food delivery service in your area and just enjoy the benefits.

Total Diet Food provide a full, fresh, gourmet, diet delivery service throughout London.

Indian Takeaway - The Healthier Way

By Bashir Islam

When you think of an Indian takeaway, it is likely that you will conjure up the image of a greasy curry being eaten in a hurry. This will then be followed by the obligatory pangs of guilt and cries of 'why did I eat SO much?' However - this doesn't always have to be the case!

Indian cuisine is there to be enjoyed and as with any cuisine, there will be healthy options and unhealthy options. Finding the right balance is important no matter which type of food you are eating. If you are one of the more health conscious among us, you may be keen to hear our recommendations for healthier Indian cuisine options.

Our top tips to enjoy Indian takeaway, the healthier way, include:

Avoiding Fried Dishes

Deep fried dishes, such as Indian starters like bhajis, pakoras and samosas will be high in calories due to the frying cooking method which they are subjected to. When health is in mind, deep fried dishes are best avoided! If you want to be extra good, skip starters altogether and head straight for the main!

Swapping Creamy Curries For Tomato Based Alternatives

Creamy curries such as Korma and Masala are laden with calories due to the use of ingredients such as cream, coconut milk and nuts. Swap cream based options for tomato based curries or go a step further and opt for fibre rich lentil curries such as Dansak.

Chapattis vs Nan Bread

When it comes to choosing between chapattis and nan bread, chapattis lead the way from a calorie saving perspective. Of course, when you are trying to minimise your calorie intake, accompanying breads are best avoided altogether. However if you need to satisfy your need for Indian bread, opt for wheat based chapattis.

Banishing Oil & Opting For Tandoori Dishes

Dry tandoori dishes, such as famed chicken Tikka and Shashlick, are cooked in the tandoor without oil. These dishes can offer a considerable calorie saving in comparison with sauce based curries.

Turning Up The Spice

Be brave and go for something a little spicier than normal. If a dish gets you hot under the collar, chances are that you will eat more slowly and start to feel full sooner. This comes with the added bonus of potentially eating less and saving any additional calorie intake.

Choosing Leaner Meats

Chicken and seafood based dishes are lower in calories than beef or lamb options. Simply opting for a different meat can help reduce your calorie and saturated fat intake. Going a step further and selecting a vegetarian option is likely to offer further calorie reductions for your meal.

Choosing Your Rice Wisely

Boiled rice, whilst perhaps not as exciting as colourful pilau or egg fried menu items, is a far healthier choice. Boiled rice will help you to avoid any additional oil intake.

Avoiding Chutneys

When it comes to chutneys and dips, raita is a healthier yoghurt based option in comparison to sweet, sugary chutneys such as mango chutney.

Staying Off The Booze

For many, having a curry goes hand in hand with a glass of nice cold beer or lager. Whilst this may complement your meal, it leads to additional calorie intake and bloating. Instead, drink something non-carbonated, such as a juice or even water.

Snacking Is Your Enemy! Or Is It?

By Samuel Hinchcliffe

Food like chocolate and sweets are obviously to be avoided on a diet, but the hardest part of a diet is avoiding them! The solution is to not buy them at all and stock up on healthy alternatives so when you do get hungry in between meal times you have no choice but to eat healthily.

Your next thought should be, what do I buy instead? Well...

Celery with Hummus

Celery will not directly cause you to lose weight, but it is a great aid in weight loss because it is very low in calories and has a lot of filling fiber. Since, celery is 95% water it actually has a negative calorie count, this due to the fact you burn more calories eating it than you from consuming it. The addition of celery to your diet will help you tremendously with your weight loss efforts. I consider it to be the most important food to aid weight loss! Hummus is made from chickpeas and tahini. The nutritional benefits of hummus can be rooted down from each of its ingredients. For one, chickpeas are very healthy because they do not contain any cholesterol or saturated fats. They are also rich in protein. This makes hummus a favourite among vegetarians. Tahini, meanwhile, is full of fat and calories. However, the fact that it is used sparingly in most hummus recipes and that it mostly contains unsaturated fat means there is not much to worry about. Like chickpeas, tahini is also high in protein. Also, it is a great source of calcium, which over the past few years has been getting attention due to its slimming effects on the metabolism. Research suggests that calcium may prevent weight gain because it promotes more fat to be burned and less fat to be stored. Experts suggest three servings of dairy every day while also reducing calories in other areas of your diet to accommodate your increased dairy intake.

Green Tea as everybody knows is very good for your diet and health, but why?

Tea's health benefits are largely due to its high content of flavonoids - plant-derived compounds that are antioxidants. Green Tea is the best food source of a group called catechins. Another beneficial plant-derivative is polyphenol found in green tea which works to intensify levels of fat oxidation and the rate at which your body turns food into calories. This therefore helps you to loss weight. A recent U.S. study of overweight men found that, with no other changes to their diet or exercise regimes, drinking green tea three times a day burned up 200 extra calories a day. Polyphenols can also help block the growth of skin cancer cells, including: skin, breast, lung, colon, esophageal, and bladder. Green Tea also helps to improve the ratio of LDL (good) cholesterol to HDL (bad) cholesterol by reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol whilst leaving the HDL untouched. In fact, For every glass of Green Tea you drink you can expect a reduction of 0.015 milli-mols per liter (mmol/L), or 0.58 milli-grams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Something you may not have considered is, how to get the best out of your cup of Tea. The best advice I could give is to allow the tea to steep for three to five minutes to bring out its catechins. The best way to get the catechins and other flavonoids in tea is to drink it freshly brewed. Decaffeinated, bottled ready-to-drink tea preparations, and instant teas have less of these compounds.

Avocados

Half an avocado contains 3.4g of fibre, including soluble and insoluble, both of which your body needs to keep the digestive system running smoothly. Plus, soluble fibre slows the breakdown of carbohydrates in your body, helping you feel full for longer. Avocados also contain oleic acid, a fat that activates the part of your brain that makes you feel full. Healthier unsaturated fats containing oleic acid have been shown to produce a greater feeling of satiety than less-healthy saturated fats and trans fats found in processed foods.

Mango

Much like Green Tea, according to new research study, mango fruit has been found to protect against colon, breast, leukemia and prostate cancers. Several trial studies suggest that polyphenolic anti-oxidant compounds in mango are known to offer protection against breast and colon cancers.

Bananas

They're amazing at making you feel full without having to consume too many calories (113 calories a banana). They provide the body with potassium which reduced water retention, as well as a high zinc content which helps make your skin look healthy. Without a doubt a bananas benefits heavily outweigh the benefits of other fruits, for example, apples. Bananas have two times as many carbohydrates as an apple, five times as much Vitamin A and iron and three times as much phosphorus. If it's energy you need, then a banana is ideal! It provides long-lasting energy which is far superior than coffee, without the crash that caffeine provides afterwards.

A good cholesterol controlling diet avoids certain foods and encourage vice versa. Below are some dietary suggestions which will help you out in lowering the cholesterol levels.

Avoid Foods that Contain Saturated Fat

Saturated fats produce Cholesterol. Therefore a good cholesterol controlled diet avoids foods which are rich in saturated fat and if at all possible completely eliminate them. If in some cases certain foods cannot be avoided totally, they should be taken in less quantity. Some of them are processed foods and high in fat animal products such as chicken skin or beef. Along with this saturated vegetable fats should be avoided. These things also elevate the level of bad cholesterol in the body.

Eat Foods Rich in Fiber

High fiber foods like bread especially those made from less refined flour are good for controlling and lowering the cholesterol levels. In addition to this you should eat more amounts of grains and cereals. These foods help in lowering the cholesterol level along with the calorie intake. Excess calories are naturally converted into fat by the body. And excess fat increases the risk of high cholesterol levels.

Eat More Vegetables and Fruits

Leafy vegetables such as cabbages, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce etc. should be included in the diet to reduce or control the cholesterol level. Along with these leafy vegetables fruits should also be consumed. Fat levels in these foods are negligible. These foods provide naturally occurring minerals and vitamins.

Eat Fish and Lean Meat

A cholesterol-controlling diet also features portions of fish. Fatty fish, like cod, salmon and tuna that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids a prominent nutrient necessary for the body to confiscate excess cholesterol. People who cannot avoid eating meat should go for lean meat such as poultry without the skin.

Eat the right quantities

It is not just about changing your health habits like removing or adding food items to your diet which is required for lowering the cholesterol levels. You should also make sure to eat these foods in right quantities. It is suggested to read the labels or refer the level of various nutrients in particular food before you consume it. Mainly 6- to 7-servings of cereals, 3- to 5-servings of vegetables, and 2- to 4-servings of fruits a day is good options to keep your cholesterol levels at bay.

Great Advice For Losing Weight The Healthy Way

By Kenneth Pudol

In order to lose any weight you have to be aware of what you are doing. With all the advice and often conflicting guidance available, it is hard to know the right way to go. The best way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume.

If your main purpose in exercising is to lose weight, you should focus more on cardiovascular exercise than on weight training. Lifting weights for strength training will add to your fitness, but never forget that heart rate-boosting cardio is the center piece of a weight loss exercise program. If you want to lose weight cardio exercises are better than weight lifting.

Adding whole grains to your diet is important when it comes to losing weight. You can either ask a professional nutritionist for info about whole grains, or ask his uncertified counterpart, Google. Opt for foods that have not been enriched or refined. Many companies advertise their use of whole grains but once you know how to recognize them, shopping for whole grain products is simple.

In order for your diet to be a success, reward yourself when you exhibit good behavior. Go to the movies, get a massage or take yourself shopping. The positive reinforcement of a new outfit can be a great motivator as you continue to work hard to reach your goal weight.

Make time for breakfast in the morning, before you go to work. If you don't have time to cook, your first instinct may be to just grab a breakfast pastry on your way out. However, these items contain lots of empty calories. Fruit and a bowl of oatmeal can equal a great breakfast as opposed to something like a pastry.

When you workout, try to use sneakers that are soft with a strong cushion. Since you will be working out your body and may become sore, you don't want to add anymore soreness. You do not necessarily have to purchase the best shoes out there, but make sure you get a quality pair.

Manage your stress levels in order to keep off the weight. When we're stressed, our bodies hoard calories to help protect itself. Although you are aware your stress is just temporary, your body may think you are trying to fight off some terrible thing. Therefore, keep your stress at a minimum and attempt to remain calm in order to assist your body in losing weight.

Take a before photo and an after photo of yourself to document your progress. This helps you get perspective about your progress even when the scale says you haven't lost any weight. You can also use these photos to show your family and friends how you are progressing.

The tips outlined above have worked for countless people, and they can also be effective for you. Don't waste time reading and researching diets that seem too good to be true. By following our tips, you will be able to start losing weight this very moment. By using these tips, you will soon see great results.

Fruit Health Facts

By Robert N. Perry

Everyone knows that eating a healthy portion of fruit each day will not only keep your body running smoothly but keep the weight off due to their low calorie content. However, this is just one of their great attributes. Fruits are also full of essential minerals and vitamins which act as regulatory compounds. These include carotene, vitamin C as well as vitamin C complexes. However, these are just basic fruit health facts. Fruits have a number of benefits and uses other than nourishing the body with vitamins.

One of the interesting points to note concerning fruit health facts is that fruits are some of the best sources of antioxidants. Vitamin C and beta carotene are known to be some of the most potent antioxidants in the world. Antioxidants are believed to eliminate oxidative stress on the body's cells. They do so by neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are unstable compounds that are created during fat metabolism and certain environmental factors. Consequently, free radicals are believed to be responsible for altering the affected cell's metabolism resulting in abnormal cell growth. Fruits such as oranges, strawberries and melons are also excellent sources of vitamin C.

Another one of the interesting fruit health facts is that they are rich sources of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are poly-phenolic compounds found mostly in "blue fruits" such as blue berries, blackberries as well as the acai berry. So named for their blue pigments, blue fruits have powerful antioxidant properties offering protection against a number of problems such as infections, aging and some forms of cancer.

The tomato, which is commonly mistaken for a vegetable, is known for its high antioxidant concentration. Interestingly, one particular antioxidant, lycopene, found in high concentrations in tomatoes has been linked to reducing the chances of one developing cancer. In order to receive all their nutritional and health benefits, tomatoes are best cooked but can still be eaten raw. This is contrary to most fruit health facts that say fruit is best eaten raw to receive the best health benefits.

When choosing which fruits to add to your diet, you should try to select fruits that are rich in potassium. Great examples of such fruits include bananas, oranges, cantaloupe and honey dew melons. Moreover, when choosing fruits that are canned or packed, be sure to take the healthier option i.e. those canned in 100% fruit juice or water rather than those canned in syrup.

You will also be interested to learn that a number of fruits such as mango and apricots go well with meat dishes such as chicken. Moreover, fruits are known to be low in calories and make some of the best alternatives to snacks that are high in fat and sodium. This means that replacing junk food snacks with health fruit snacks can be a great way to lose weight.

When learning on fruit health facts, you will be interested to know that fruits are also popularly used in a number of natural skin care products. For instance, the avocado when ripe is crushed and mixed with egg yolks to be used as a face mask during the summer to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. Moreover, bananas are used to naturally remove blackheads while cucumber can be used to relieve sun burns.

One more of the fruit health facts I would like to mention is their high fiber content. We all know how important fiber is to the body, especially when it comes to preventing constipation and removing undesirable elements from the system.

Prepackaged Weight Loss Food - Meal Packs for Weight Watchers

By Phillip England

Essentially, you gain weight by taking in more calories than you can burn in a day. The average person would burn about 1,800 calories in a day without having to do strenuous activities. If you add about 3,500 calories to your normally necessary caloric intake, you gain an extra pound. This is where diet would come in.

Most of us are striving to get back in shape by going through strict diet plans. Companies have capitalized on the public's need by introducing prepackaged food for weight loss. These diet packs are touted to help consumers discipline themselves into following strict dietary programs that will help them lose those unwanted calories.

We all know how difficult it is to follow a diet regimen on our own. Prepackaged weight loss food makes it easy to stay within the limits of what we can and cannot eat. There are a lot of prepackaged food for weight loss that have come up in the market today. Each one of these products promises excellent results. These plans are designed especially for people who simply do not have the time to plan their own meals to maintain just normal calorie-intake.

Banting: The low-carb pack

In essence, the Banting diet includes a low-carbohydrate program which prohibits only six types of food: bread, milk, butter, beer, sugar and potatoes. The prepackaged weight loss food program doesn't restrict the intake of carbohydrates. Rather, it aims to lessen it and replacing it with protein-rich food (meat and poultry), combined with vegetables, unsweetened fruit and several glasses of dry wine. By eating in moderation four times within the day, the program is touted to make you lose about one pound a week.

Atkins: The modern low-carb pack

The next prepackaged weight loss food program also consists of a low-carbohydrate diet. For Atkins, instead of a restricted plan which prohibits the intake of carbohydrates, he suggests a controlled-carbohydrate diet. With deprivation, the body tends to digest fats and high-carb foods faster than normal thus inducing a craving for sugar. The Atkins prepackaged weight loss diet will allow you to take in carbohydrates that will not increase your blood sugar levels. If you decide to go for this kind of plan, you'll have to say no to sweets, though. Instead, you'll need to fill up on protein-rich foods. Once you get to the weight maintenance stage (after getting to your ideal body weight) then you can go ahead and enjoy an occasional carbohydrate-rich meal.

South Beach: A balance of the good and the bad

Unlike low-carb diets, the South Beach focuses on a healthy balance between good carbohydrates and fats. Under this prepackaged weight loss food plan, you can say goodbye to baked products, sodas and other processed foods. The meal pack is divided into phases. Phase I, which lasts two weeks, attempts to eliminate insulin resistance so you're going to need to cut off on all fruit, bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sugar, alcohol and baked goods. You can only eat lean meat, skinless poultry, seafood, low-fat cheese, eggs, tofu and vegetables. Feel free to eat sweets but you need to limit that to about 75 calories a day. Once you're done with the first phase, you slowly reintroduce some of the foods that were banished in Phase I. Slowly, you bring back more of the banished foods as you go along but you need to be careful about what you eat because you may end up going back to your old eating habits.

The Beverly Hills Diet: All-fruit plan

This prepackaged weight loss food plan consists mainly of fruits. If you intend to go for this pack, you are not supposed to eat protein with carbohydrates. It consists of a no-brainer thirty-five-day meal plan with specific items to be taken at every meal. For the first 10 days, all you can eat is fruit. After that, you can add in carbs and butter and then eventually, protein comes into the mix. The prepackaged weight loss food plan is known to promise weight loss of up to fifteen pounds in about five weeks.

Daily Meal Plans for Weight Loss - Designing Effective Meal Plans To Lose Weight By M Edward

By M Edward

Daily meal plans for weight loss are essential for healthy living. The plans should be designed in a way that is balanced. The basic needs for calcium, protein and other essential nutrients must be incorporated in the plan. It must have a variety of healthy delicious recipes, an abundance of whole grains and healthy amounts of fresh fruits for vitamins. This design is effective in losing weight if the calorie level is kept low.

Daily meal plans for weight loss must cater for the right calorie level for both men and women. I.e. a diet containing 1000 calories per day is right for most women, 1200-1400 calories per day would be appropriate for men. Most menus come in three calorie levels i.e. 1200, 1500 and 1800. These should be consumed with healthy snacks to enrich the diet and accord satisfaction. This daily plan enhances weight loss since losing weight is basically a matter of consuming fewer calories than the amount that is expended.

The design of a daily meal plan must be varied since losing weight depends on certain factors i.e. individual's height; a tall person requires a higher-calorie plan while a shorter person should do well on a lower-calorie diet. This simple approach is also applicable to cases of people with more weight and less weight. People with less weight should opt for menus with lower-calorie content while people with more weight are advised to go for higher-calorie diets. It is advisable to start on a middle calorie diet if one is not sure of his/her physique status. For those who start with middle diets, some adjustments will be made depending on one's level of satisfaction i.e. physical satisfaction and how quickly one is losing weight. The bottom line is all meals taken should have low calories content.

It is difficult to adhere to the daily nutrition requirement. So a formula for daily meal plans for weight loss was formulated. This gives a more precise calculation of a goal in obtaining a weight loss. One's weight in pounds is multiplied by 12 then 1000 calories are subtracted. After this the calorie level that is closest to the answer is selected. One is advised to follow this directive strictly for effective results. The formula is used in many clinical weight loss trials. It is assumed that the one using this equation is sedentary with emphasis laid on satisfaction. One should choose a calorie level that accords him/her the best satisfaction. This gauge is determined by the feeling of satisfaction and whether one is losing weight or not. So, an effective daily meal design should enhance weight loss to all consumers.

In general, one should design effective daily meal plans for losing weight in a personalized manner. This is because different daily meal plans work for different people. These daily meal plans coupled with physical activity level, should give the desired outcome of weight loss. One can fill a plate with foods loaded with nutrients but of low calorie content. This accords satisfaction which is ideally why people eat to stay healthy. This does away with the popular myth that eating less/ slimming is essential to attaining weight loss.

Natural Weight Loss: What Is Conscious Eating?

By Ruth Hadikin

Conscious eating is a very simple approach that can bring many important health benefits. Not only can it help our bodies, by helping us to become healthier and lose weight, it even benefits our mind. Why? Because, done with care and attention, conscious eating actually becomes a form of active meditation. We don't 'play with our food' - we meditate with it!

I was first introduced to conscious eating in 2001 by my coach at that time: Anya Mann of Conscious Journey.com. It helped me to make simple changes that have had a profound effect.

There are currently many approaches to diet and nutrition that are labelled as 'conscious eating' so to avoid confusion, it is worth mentioning what it is, and what it is not. It is not 'healthy eating'. It is not 'eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables'. It is a common mistake to think that eating 'consciously' means 'making a conscious choice to eat healthily'. It is not the same thing, so it is important to be clear about this and notice that there are some important distinctions.

There is nothing wrong with eating healthily, and making a conscious decision to choose healthier food. However it is still possible to prepare a very healthy meal, and then eat it unconsciously: with no awareness on your part of either the food, or your relationship to it. Many of us eat healthy food very unconsciously! So, even though it might be the healthiest meal in the world, based on the very latest research and current ideas about what is 'healthy', and prepared with the greatest of care, it is not conscious eating unless you are also giving your full attention to your experience, while you are eating it.

If you are having dinner and are busy with the conversation, and/or watching TV, and texting your Mum while you eat it - it is not conscious eating. Why? Because you are not giving your full present-moment awareness to the experience of eating itself. There is the distinction: conscious eating is not about what you eat, but about how you eat it. It is about your experience, not your diet.

True conscious eating means approaching the experience of eating with consciousness. It means bringing full present-moment awareness, attention and appreciation, to the experience of eating irrespective of what we are eating. You could be eating a fried egg with tomato ketchup, but you could still eat it consciously, slowly, and with your full attention. Noticing everything: how you feel about it, what it smells like, what it tastes like, what the texture is like, and how your body is feeling and responding to it, as you continue to eat. This is conscious eating.

When we eat consciously, with full present-moment awareness, we pay attention to our body's response to the food. We naturally begin eating more slowly, and we begin to notice when we feel full. We begin to notice which foods our body is wanting more of, and which ones it wants less of. This is a gentle, gradual, process - and nothing is ever forced.

We might begin by eating all the junk food that we like, and over time we will naturally adjust our relationship to it: so we may want less of that and more of something else. Over time we may gradually eat smaller amounts more often, as we begin to notice that our body has it's own rhythm, and we begin to honor that. Over time our body resumes a weight that is more natural for us, and our weight begins to stabilize.

Our eating patterns naturally change, not because anything is ever imposed from outside, but because we are simply listening to our own body's needs. Eventually we arrive at the point where we love giving our body what it loves, and we never allow it to feel hungry, or overfull: so we only ever eat what we like, whenever we like!

The Joy of Raw Food Diet Weight Loss

By Todd L Butcher

The raw food diet is rapidly gaining popularity and awareness among knowledgeable health conscious consumers. As we enter the 21st century people are becoming more diet conscious due to an increase in understanding about how the body works. When people pursue raw food diet weight loss and abandon modern processed foods they quickly see a change in the way they feel and an increase in their energy levels. The benefits of turning from soda pop and processed food to more healthy things like uncooked vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains, beans, dried fruit, and even seaweed are bringing millions of people benefits like increased energy, better skin tone and even reduced illnesses.

Raw food diet weight loss revolves around cutting out foods that are not readily processed by the body. By replacing these processed foods with natural foods that are not cooked at excessive temperature many enzymes and nutrients are left intact. Studies have shown that heating food above 115 degrees F can destroy enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food. At least 75% of the diet must be uncooked or raw food in order for the diet to be a true raw food diet. If you are thinking about pursuing raw food diet weight loss you need to make sure that your body's PH is not moving towards being more acidic than alkaline. An acidic body is a fat body as the metabolism will be slowed down and more inefficient. When an unhealthy diet of processed foods is consumed this will create an acidic condition in the body. To test the body's acidity you can use PH test strips, these are inexpensive and they can be used to help determine not only your PH but the right diet schedule needed to meet your weight loss goals. By eating an alkaline diet you will find weight loss is more effective. This is the major tip in achieving long term weight loss. Fruits, vegetables and herbs will help assist you in your efforts to maintain a more alkaline body.

Eat Fresh and Organic

Eating organic foods can help as they contain higher nutrient levels. Organic foods have more alkalizing minerals than conventionally grown foods and eating organic will speed up your weight loss efforts. Make sure to buy the highest quality and most delicious food. It may cost more but the great taste and higher quality will ensure that your raw food diet weight loss plans are successful. The lowest calorie count per ounce will be found with raw greens and vegetables. Fruits are next in line. In general, fruits have a slightly higher calorie count because of their naturally occurring sugars which will help with weight loss due to the fact that this will raise the body's blood sugar and reduce hunger levels. People will often eat a piece of fruit before their meal to reduce over eating. If you eat a piece of sweet fruit like some pineapple or an apple 30 minutes before your main meal this can significantly reduce your hunger cravings so that when you do finally eat you will want to eat less. Raw food diet weight loss is usually successful when a complete lifestyle change is made. This change is typically rewarded with a higher energy level and possibly a reduction in illness.

Best Weight Loss Diets Review - Unhealthy Food and Eating Habits Conundrum

By Claire Liebig-Denham

Historically, human beings ate raw unprocessed food as it was available and I don't suppose there were any cavemen dialing for a pizza and chips to be delivered. However, over time humans started to increasingly process natural foods to the degree that we are even putting additives, preservatives, chemicals and coloring in our food. The food in its natural form contains all the minerals, vitamins, fiber, protein, fat, acid and carbohydrate. Its only when we start cooking, preserving and over processing food stuff that we expend, alter or eradicate these vital ingredients.

We demand cheaper food so get low quality ingredients that are not as nutritious and beneficial for us. In February 2013 supermarkets made the shocking revelation in the United Kingdom, that horse meat was found in processed food that was suppose to contain beef such as ready meals and burgers. The consumer desire for less inexpensive food was held responsible for the substitute meat.

Its not just type of food we are eating that is detrimental to our health but the quantities we are eating. In the western world we eat for pleasure and not to survive. We will talk about metabolism in another article, but excess food basically means excess fat, and, if you are eating to excess those sugary, fatty foods, you are going to be eating more than your body actually needs. It is not rocket sciences so why are we all so over weight?

Simply put; because processed food is very tasty, the brain loves it and makes you want and eat more of it. The body hates it and because the human body has not, nor may ever, adapt to utilize highly processed food, it stores excess fat without taking in account that the body is growing obese. The natural digestive system does not factor in and take account of over eating. It will just go on and on storing fat sadly, even when it is detrimental the workings on the body.

It is a human love of food is most certainly attributable to increased heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, cancers and kidney/liver problems just mention a few health issues that can arise. So what can we do to eat healthy? Well most diets one way or another will result in you eating healthier and some are better balanced than others. We are going to find out exactly what is what in the diet world by impartially reviewing some of the most popular diets out there. My findings may shock you!
