Healthy Salad Dressing - Your Salad Is Unhealthy Without These Salad Dressing Tips

By Katy Mills

Most people enjoy pouring rich dressings over their salads, and while they may think that they are eating more healthily, the benefits could be reduced by the calories in the dressing.

Salad dressings are a tasty addition to the meal, but they contain a lot of fats and calories that you don't want when you are attempting to lose weight. There are some really flavour some alternatives that are a healthier option though.

Mix equal parts of olive oil or flaxseed oil with balsamic vinegar for a healthier dressing. A little salt and pepper can be added to give some seasoning before the whole mix is shaken together.

Olive oil and flaxseed oil contain fat and calories, but the fat is one that the body requires. Flaxseed oil feeds so many parts of the body that it is almost impossible for it to be transferred to body fat.

Try squeezing some lemon juice onto your salad, as the tart sweetness can be very enjoyable.

Choose bottled vinaigrette type dressings as they have fewer calories and fat. Many low-fat and non-fat dressings, while having a lower fat content are often as high in calories as the usual dressing. The reason is that they are loaded with sugar to compensate for the loss of flavour that the fat provides.

If you just cannot give up your favourite dressing, try eating it in a way that won't up your fat intake. Don't pour the dressing over your salad but put some in a side dish.

If you dip your fork into the dish of dressing as you eat, you will get a small amount of dressing with each mouthful. You won't consume nearly as much dressing as if you had poured it on, but will still enjoy the taste. You will be amazed at how little you will need to get the enjoyable flavour you like.
