Make Healthy NYC Fast Food Choices

By Richard Harden

More people in Manhattan and other areas of New York City are realizing the importance of eating well. The problem is finding the time, because everyone is in a rush. Whether you work at a show on Broadway or a business near Union Square, it is important to find healthy food places to grab a quick meal.

Because there are over 20,000 restaurants in New York City, it can be difficult to sort through all of the choices. These places range from large chains to small mom-and-pop operations. You can find fine food establishments like Eleven Madison Park in Union Square, Per Se on the Upper West Side or healthy fast food options like Energy Kitchen. The food goes far beyond sprouts and bland tofu. Instead, you find healthy options such as gourmet raw food, fish and poultry and wraps. This is a much better choice than fast food establishments like Burger King and Taco John's.

If you are new to the area, the best place to look for options is the "New York Times" Dining and Wine guide. They have a huge restaurant database, with more than 4,000 eating establishments listed. They provide ratings on a one-to-four scale, all given by an in-house food critic and customers. Reading what others say can help you make healthy selections, and it can keep you from getting stuck in an eating groove.

Eating lots of healthy food, at least from places that serve low nutrient content, isn't a healthy choice. The problem is some feel like this is their only option when they are in a hurry. They might also be worried about the cost, as fast food tends to offer items at lower prices.
